My PB Limmy Heifer (.best and only pic I have.) (need names for her too!)

Welcome to the Family! Glad you decided to get in on the Limis. She looks very functional, but its hard to tell much more than that from the pic. Also, she is a red Limi, so you might as well get used to people saying she lacks style- around here that is code for not black and not enough hair...

    Star Lake Herefords Dispersal

Sorry to keep on with highjacking this thread, but I may have some insight on the reason behind Limi ranking third. They have an open herd book and for the last several years you could register a unregistered female of another breed with NALF as a foundation animal, providing they tested clean...

2nd part to getting cattle to drink different water

If you use the gatorade powder, which I recomend, a tablespoon or two will do the job. It depends on how bad the water is when you get to where you're going!

    Best Truck To Get???

Except for the injectors! I have heard some years are better than others for the Duramax and the GMCs are often more reliable then their Chevy counterparts. We just traded in a '02 Chevy 3500 (several sets of new injectors- the last in Denver this year) for an 05' GMC 3500, so we look forward to...

Tricks to get calves to drink different water supply???

We use Gatorade( blue frost or something like that). The powder works excellent because in dissolves well and will not make a mess in the show box. Also, it is supposed to have nutrition for athletes, so the thinking is that it would be helpful to stock to- not sure if it really has an impact or...

Are there dairy steers at your county or state fair?

Yes they still do. They have divisions for registered and crossbred dairy  steers. There are often some pretty great ones, but unfortunately, they must compete against all the beef breed divisions in supreme row, so they often are picked last for overall standings. Also, most county fairs that I...

    Lamintis or founder

The bull in my avatar did the same thing about 2 days ago! He was getting a few too many range cubes for treats and overdosed on protein. Gave banamine, took away all grain (or range cubes) and rinsed legs a couple of times a day for about 1/2 hour. Soft ground is also a must, not easy in some...

    Show Barn Bedding

We use sand and love it! Actually, it is washed lime screenings, so there is no dust. Also its heavier, so the fans don't cause it to move. It also seems to stay cooler. We have never had any negative impact on hair condition, which might be because we have Limis and the hair is markedly...

    Skillathon materials

I'm not sure if there is a version on the web, but the resource books put out by Ohio State University are great. The have ones for beef, sheep, swine and goats. They are not terribly in depth in anyone area, just a good base of general knowledge. They cover breeds, feed stuffs, conformation and...

    SAV Brand Name 9115

Thanks for the response! We used him on a couple of Angus daughters of our herdsire, Boot Jack Maxxum, a BR Midland son. They have plenty of style and are correct, but could use a bit of mass and some frame. We prefer our Angus to be a bit larger in stature (FS 6-7) to keep them in type with our...

    SAV Brand Name 9115

Has anybody used Brand Name? What kind of results did you get? I really like the looks of this bull, and I used him on a couple head, so I am curious! Thanks in advance for any responses!

    State fair picks

Cattle Cards, you've got me there. I've only been there for the last 10 years! I didn't even think they did an open steer show anymore, so I didn't take that into account as far as numbers. I still say it would be awesome if a breed steer won, maybe I just like to root for the underdog! We were...

    State fair picks

You might be right about Jessica.  If she were eligible, I'd say Kelli Retallick.  Calli should be eligible, as she had a heifer at the Pioneer Showdown.  Her brother Ty has a nice heifer and has been winning and you might see Reba Keene up there as well.  And in the steer category, I forgot...

    State fair picks

Are Callie and Jessica still showing as Jrs this year? My sister is the same age as them and I thought both said they were done last year even though they still had a year of eligibility left. There is a whole group of very competitive showman that are finishing up their Jr careers, so there...

    bald spots

FYI, the Mane N Tail is super cheap, you can even get it at the dollar store around here. I know people who use it for their hair, so it must work! ;)

    Opinions on calf please!

This is a Charolais Limousin cross calf born 2/24/2012. He is sired by the bull in my avatar. Would he do for a slick show steer?

    Sick calf question

Now, there is bright red blood in his stools (still water), so is that because of the irritated digestive system or should I treat him for Coccidiosis? Coccidiosis was my first guess! Sounds like maybe he was weakened and picked it up. Maybe he doesn't have it, but this is only the first reason...

    bald spots

Based on the location, I would guess its dry skin. Your choice of bedding is probably adding to the problem. I would recommend using mane n tail (horse conditioner) on the effected areas the last thing before you put the steers in the cooler or out for the night. It will soften the skin and help...

Anybody Else Feeding hay in June?

Come to NW Wisconsin! We've had more rain lately than we know what to do with. We've got green grass coming out our ears, but up until the last week, have had a hell of a time getting the hay put up. We will also probably see our first snow in about September this year too!  ;)
