heifer won't lead at wits end with her need help show is on march 10th

AAOK is right the easier you go about this the better. I've seen some nice calves turn into real idiots when a little to much force is used. The trick is out smarting them, not out muscling them.

heifer won't lead at wits end with her need help show is on march 10th

Here's an old Indian trick that doesn't involve pain [ for the calf or the guy on the lead rope] . Feed the calf in an individual pan and put a small salt block in it. Don't let calf drink until  the next evening an dlead to a water sorce. Do this several times and you will be amaized.

    Half chute preference?

We have one of each . Both are Sullivan chutes . I like both but the half chute should only be used with well broke calves. There isn't much to that half chute so I don't think it would take much for one to be upside down in it.

Are U.S. cattle really bad for the environment?

Isn't it amazing how well agriculture fares when studied by an honest man with no hidden agenda.

Cover the basics in clipping and preparing your calf

To keep from 'blowing them away" just work with them. Take them out to feed and care for the animals, when they can do that part right then move on. I know it takes time but remember, you have a lifetime of knowledge, they just have a few years. If the kids are willing to do chores w/o being...

Apalled by a breeders behavior after a show!!!

After 20 plus years of showing I think I've figured out a couple of things. (1) There is no " right way" to do anything. (2) The guy in the suit is the only opinion that counts until after the show. Once you figure that out everything else is easy. The only thing that P---ing and moaning will...

Cover the basics in clipping and preparing your calf

Congrats on hlping the next generation learn the right way to do things. Your best bet is find the best fitter in your area and talk them into putting on a clinic. If you have good attendance plan a profesional clinic next year. I highly reccomend the Sullivan clinics - took my 17 y.o. son to...

Where to buy Interior Semi-truck trailer wall Panels..

Something else you might try is LRP or laminated resin panels. They are available at lumber yards or good retail stores. A company in Springfeild Ill. makes laminated plywood and sheetrock products- they might have something for you- I think the name is NUDO or some thing like that. The cheaper...

Apalled by a breeders behavior after a show!!!

I'm probably going to offend someone here, so please forgive me if I do. IT'S ONE MAN'S OPINION !!! I don't know the fellow in question, and I'm sure I'm not missing anything. The judge must be competent or they wouldn't hire him. Someone needs to tell him to pull up his big girl panties and...

    HELP!!! Bottle Feeding a calf.

You  need to watch the temp. of the water you use. Just like your mother did when you where nursing- if it feels "nice and warm"  on the inside of your wrist it's good to go. I've raised bucket calves for a few years and they can be finicky but if they get hungry enough they'll eat. Keep an eye...

My Kids Big Distric Show This Weekend - Like To Have Some Advice/Tips

I'm sure any of the fitting clinics would be great. At the Stock Show U clinic we attended Chuck McCoulough was with our group. He is a great guy and a hell of a hand with a pair of clippers. But most people will agree with me, it's more than fitting and hair care. They also teach showmanship...

My Kids Big Distric Show This Weekend - Like To Have Some Advice/Tips

I know this is a little late - I suggest taking your kids to one of Sullivan's Stock Show U clinics. They do a really nice job putting them together. Your kids will learn alot and so will you. I'm as competitive as anyone and I can stand back and watch my son fit our calves now.[ with a few...

Yahoo Says Agriculture is #1 Useless College Major

I have2 daughters that have graduated with ag degrees- one is an ag teacher\FFA adviser the other a grain accountant with a Growmark company.  Neither had ag classes in high school  but now both are happily employed in solid ag positions. This article-IMO- was just babble from some news hack...

Yahoo Says Agriculture is #1 Useless College Major

Makes me wonder what the author's degree is in and how many with that degree end up in that field. Funny he doesn't mention that in the article.

Help- Filling up cattle on showday.

I like winning fill also. Try some Showmaster "Sales Edge" if you have a dealer close. The night before you show put a small salt block in their feed pan and let them lick on it while eating- they'll drink more the next day.

Told its not a good idea to trim/trimming hair causes calf to shed winter coat

I agree with the previous comment. We sure didn't buy ours to look at all winter. Clip that s.o.b. and drag his butt to a show . It's good for the calf and the kid.
