    TM Gus bull calf

PM what you heard as I have not talked to Tony since he got the bull. I will have to call him, but if he sold him that is fine with me as I will be getting some of that money.  :)  This reminds me of when he bought Radioactive off of Moore's and then resold him for more than triple. Oh well, I...

Why doesn't the Shorthorn breed have a epd for stayability.

I don't know if I am a fan of mandatory reporting on all animals, but I think that it should be mandatory to report on all animals that are registered. The point I have is that probably 90% of our bulls are cut and fed out. This is simply because we don't have a strong bull market due to...

    TM Gus bull calf

Thank you. It amazes me how people can't see the good in one if it is not cleaned up. It also amazes me how bad some of these bulls are that make it as A.I. sires. Oh well, to each their own. Everyone has the right to make their own decisions.

Why doesn't the Shorthorn breed have a epd for stayability.

I think a stayability EPD is a great option to have if we are trying to reach a commercial market. However, I also think that it is not anything that a lot of "shorthorn Breeders" would even consider. I mean can you imagine the numbers on a clubby deal, or even something that is trump on trump. ...

Wise's Paige 640 Castlerock X WHR Sonny. She was Reserve Calf Champ at Illinois behind Kearns Miss V8 Mona Michelle in 2007. Her dam was our Sonny cow that won the Jr show at Denver in 2005.  Our Red bull that was Reserve Grand at Illinois this past year was her previous years calf.

    TM Gus bull calf

Thanks! We retained a 1/4 semen interest and the right to buy possession back when Tony is done using him. If he had been polled he would have never left. I wish I had taken the time to clean him up and get a better picture. I don't have a problem with using a horned bull if he is good enough...

    TM Gus bull calf

About a year ago I posted a pic of this Tm Gus X K-Kim Castlerock son on SP. I thought I would post another picture about a year later to show his progress. We just sold him to Tony Kershaw (Ex-Herdsman for Don Cagwin). Tony came to look at heifers and left with a bull. Who said you can't sell...

Got it: old Haumont shorthon semen

68' Par Cherry 71' weighed 2000-2100 mature. He was not small (6.5 frame) and was used by his original owner to add frame to the small cattle of the late 60's.  I also must thank SP for this experience it was a pleasure speaking with some of the inquiries on this semen. Frank Haumont's grandson...

    Show steer numbers (poll)

As an Ag Teacher and the county 4-H beef Superintendant I think I would like to reply to both of the above statements. First, children today think they are entitled. They think they are entitled to a good grade, selling calves at an auction, and pretty much everything else simply by showing up...

    Minn Shorthorn results

We have the same deal in Illinois. When I was President of the ISA we had this in place, but thankfully never had to implement it. What is strange to me is that the bulls showed up, and then were sorted. We agreed to sort before the catalog came out to save time and expense for the consignor.

TM Gus x TPS Coronet Leader 21st Heifer

What a great looking calf! The moment I looked at these pictures it put a smile on my face, and I'm sure yours too. It's the little things like a newborn calf you have been long anticipating that makes the cattle business so great! I once had a hog guy tell me he didn't have the patients to...

9th Annual Who's Your Daddy Shorthorn Bull Sale

Not so much in love with the photo of Lot 2, but I do like his video.  Lot 10 is my pick, to bad he has to stay in Western Canada. The U.S. NEEDS a bull like him.

Cattlefarmer I understand exactly what you are trying to say, but I think you are misunderstanding Sue's point. I believe her point is that if the Angus breed is able to achieve these BW's in the same area then is it the weather or the genetics? What I took from her statement was the fact that...

    Need Herdsman, where to look?

I would try community colleges in surrounding states that have ag production/ livestock programs. I know that Lake Land college and Black Hawk East college in Illinois place students into these type of programs. Just give them a call and they could set you up. Jon Althaus at LLC and Dan Hoge at...

    Shorthorn bull pictures

Carl, The train wreck is that any bull born over 90 lbs in our neck of the woods is unmarketable to anyone as a purebred or commercial herd sire. So that means we simple sell them at market, and that means less profit. If we sell our bulls for an average of $2,000 vs a $800 feeder steer that...

    Shorthorn bull pictures

The University of Nebraska data showed that the avg. temp of 20 degrees in (92-93) had 11 lbs heavier calves than in (94-95) which was 11 degrees on average warmer.  Similar feed rations and genetics, but a different group of cows each year. So basically, it is a gamble that may or may not pay off.
