    An interesting statement about Simmentals

We've been raising Simmentals since the first bull was imported and that statement reflects the Simmentals that were imported from Europe, and many European Simmentals would fit that description. In Germany they are used as a dairy breed. "Americanized" Simmentals have been moderated and color...

    Cows cycling after TAI

I used a 7-day TAI protocol last year and didn't notice any of what you are describing. I had 39 re-breeds after the TAI and their cycles played out like a normal curve as you would expect. The most I had in heat on re-breeds was day 21. I had 6 cows that didn't conceive to TAI and either I...

    simmental bulls on angus cows

I think all the bulls you mentioned would work well on Angus cows. Be prepared to shell out big $$$ for Steel Force semen. I raise SimAngus cattle. Some bulls I've used are SAS T101 Sweet Meat, BMR Explorer, WS Beef Maker, In Dew Time, and Star Power. Now that I know how to use Star Power I...

    SAV Brilliance

Any more reports on this bull? ABS is running a special on him right now, maximum of 10 units for $16/straw. I'm interested in sampling him on some heifers next fall. Thanks.

    Westfall Voyager V.S. BRM Explorer

Very nice heifer! I will be more than happy with mine if that's what I can expect.

    Westfall Voyager V.S. BRM Explorer

I just sampled him last year but I think he added a little waste on the neck. But he was bred to Simbrah cows so I don't know if that's a good measure. I have some coming by SimAngus cows in Sept so I'll know more then.

    Westfall Voyager V.S. BRM Explorer

Speaking of Sweet Meat...check out this heifer I just had pictured sired by him. She's 9 months in the pic and is 3/4 Simmental 1/4 Brahman. This is the best Simbrah female that I've raised.

    Westfall Voyager V.S. BRM Explorer

I have 15 Explorer's due in September, I'll post when I get a good grip on how they're developing.

    Question......

I have to agree with OH Breeder. Isn't this whole showing cattle business about competitive fun? I'm an advisor for a state junior breed association and there's nothing I love more than seeing those kids smile when they win with their heifers. But alas, so many of us cattle people take ourselves...

    Pulling cidr one day early

Been there done that. They still came in heat.

    Aborted Fetus (pic)

If you still have the fetus collect a tissue sample and have the vet send it to a lab to be tested. That's what my vet recommends. If it's too late a blood sample can be drawn from the cow and a lab can check for diseases in the blood. I've had two heifers abort the past month, both from blue...

    Cow stepped on a nail?

I had a cow step on a nail a few months ago and after treatment you'd never know. We tied the foot and pulled the nail out. Rinsed the wound with an iodine solution. Gave her a shot of penicillin and tetanus. Gave her another penicillin shot a couple days later and kept her up close for...

    Life of CIDRS

My AI guru said the best way to sterilize is with an autoclave. Which totally makes sense. They're pricey but he has access to one at a junior college. We're thinking about purchasing one for ourselves. For our purposes to AIing 200 hd, the autoclave would pay for itself in a year.

    Last Grass Standing

I'm an hour south of San Antonio and this week we're moving cows to pastures that still have a little grass left. Our stocking numbers are down too so we've been ok but it's gonna get really rough in a few weeks without any significant rainfall. There's some in the forecast this week. Let it rain!

    AI Practice Aid

I have a tract from NASCO, not even close to the real thing but it helps. I practiced on cows that weren't going to be bred due to age or other problems and at preg check time I kept open cows to practice on. I guess you could see if your neighbors have any cows they aren't intending to breed or...

Any info on these Simmental bulls?

I have a few Sweet Meats. He sired my top heifer from my 2010 crop and he was the heaviest sire group at weaning. Birth weights were a little high 90-100, but they're definitely growthy. He makes them a lot like In Dew Time with added muscle. The picture is of my top heifer calf at 3 months...
