You know you are from a small town when .......

The stray dog and cat population out numbers the people. You can watch a cock fight while mailing a letter at the post office...true story.

What criteria do use you use to select donor cows

I'm about to do some ET work on a few cows and have two 10 year old cows and 6 year old picked out. The reason they made the list is years of proven production.I don't think I'd consider flushing a female until she had at least 3 great calves. Anyway, great cows are never out of style.

    Hudson Pines

It might just be me, but that's an absurd amount of money to spend on a cow.  (lol)

    Has anyone used IVF?

Thanks for the advice, I talked with a conventional ET tech and he thinks my cows will be enough days post calving to do a fresh transfer so I'm gonna play safe and do that for now. But it's always fun to discuss newer innovations that are available.

    Has anyone used IVF?

What I was trying to say is if I conventionally flushed these two cows I would have freeze the embryos and wait until the next breeding season to implant. If I used IVF I could transfer fresh.

    vaccinations before AI

A month before I give my cows a mineral injection and this year doing a vitamin ADE as well since we've been in drought conditions. A couple weeks before I put in CIDRs I do the vibrio/letpo vaccine.

    Has anyone used IVF?

Here's my scenario... We got  back into the registered business a couple years ago and have a couple older cows that have proven themselves over a decade. I want female replacements from these cows. They were bred to the repeat AI so to do conventional ET I would have to freeze the embryos and...

I'm considering using it on a couple donors. Does anyone have experience with using IVF and what were your thoughts?

    Camera?

I have a Canon EOS Rebel T1i and it's a great camera. Easy to use and takes great pictures. I have the 28-135 mm lens. http://www.amazon.com/Canon-T1i-Digital-18-55mm-3-5-5-6/dp/B001XURPQS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1318970845&sr=8-1

New Design 878 and In Dew Time

I have some In Dew Times and love them! I have some first calf heifers that are doing a super job with their first calves. Simmgal touched on that he shortens necks which has been my experience as well and he doesn't add muscling. However, he does do a lot of things right. All my my calves sired...

    American Hoggers

The best method we've found to use is a 4-seater helicopter with two shooters using a 12 gauge shot gun and an AK 47 annually. Quite effective. It certainly has helped with the hog population on our south Texas ranch. And the best part is hunters are more than happy to pay for their seat on the...

Rednecks hunting down feral hogs...what's not to like? http://www.txfb.org/TxAgTalks/post/2011/10/13/American-Hoggers-A-feral-hoge28099s-worst-nightmare.aspx I'm not usually a fan of reality TV, but I might have to make an exception!

    Mo Better calf

In Dew Time. I have some first calf heifers by him that are all raising super calves. Not a single dud and they are the standouts in the group. He works so well for me I'm going to go back and use him again.

What is the longest you've had a cow go over due?

Just out of curiosity, what is the longest you've had a cow go over her due date? I had two that calved right in between AI date and bull turn out. In the end I'll probably have to DNA the calves. The longest I know for sure is 13 days over.

    Cows do the darnedest things...

10 days post the trench incident the cow had a healthy bull calf!

New Website, what do you think?

Very nice web site. Easy to navigate and pleasing to the eye. The only suggestion I have is on the contact page at the bottom you have a mission statement written there that I think should be at the top of the home page.

Dead calves - need opinions on cause

It's probably too late but if you want a chance at a diagnosis the dead calf needs to be taken to a vet (maybe even afterbirth) for analysis. Sometimes that can be a dead end. My rule of thumb is two dead calves in a row = one way ticket off the ranch.

    BMR Explorer

I discovered the hard way yesterday that Explorer carries the spotting gene. Talked to genex about it and they said they'd never had a reported case. They said they would dig around for me and found a case from 2010 that went unreported. My calves by him are only a couple weeks old but look...
