I had a monopoly bull calf this morning out of 3 year old maine simmy cow. 86 lbs.good bone, hairy and wide. 45 minutes after he was born he was up bucking and playing
I used him last year for heifers and the biggest one i got was 65 lbs. out of a bleeding purple heifer. The calves grew really well and even sold a couple for county fair steers. I just try to get live calves out of first calf heifers, if their showable thats even better.
It's not your fault. I was told once if you don't have something go wrong with your cattle every once in a while you either don't enough cows or you haven't been in the business long enough.
I have a question for all of you guys that use heatwave. Isn't the point to make the calves better the sire and dam? So way arn't his sons out producing him yet? I could be wrong on this. Or are we stuck with heat wave forever?
I have found with Ali your okay if the calf comes early if it comes around or after it's due date you better get ready to pull. My Ali calves that come 7 to 10 early they weighted 62- 78 lbs, the other ones where from 84 to 98 lbs. I have 2 bred to him this year and their going to come eairly...
We do it before they hit 200 lbs. It's easier on them and you. They seem to bounce back faster the younger you do it. We tired doing it a couple of weeks after we wean but they took much longer to recover from all the stress.
We send ours to the sale barn, but I can't help if someone buys them there. I don't think I should have to tell them there something wrong either. At a sale barn you buy at your own risk.
