    The fascination with "Hairy"

I bet this post will get some replies!  ;) In the real world of functional cattle, extreme hair and extreme bone don't do much. Extreme hair, especially in the summer, can sometimes go hand in hand with infertility. Extreme bone, in heifers, can also go along with infertitily and a huge bone...

    Best Heifers

Gilbert, Is this a heifer you bought? If so, maybe you want to consider talking to whoever you bought her from before she goes to the sale barn. They might be willing to exchange her for another heifer or at least give you a credit for next fall. It would certainly make sense to do this from a...

    Linebreeding question

Some of the other Hereford breeders on this board would probably be able to fill in the details a bit better than me (mine are a little fuzzy), but at one time, the Herefords had what was called a Superior Sire program, where a bull was bred back to a large group of his daughters (50 i think) to...

    Charolais and Shorthorn

One of our neighbours used a white Shorthorn bull with alot of red & roan in his pedigree on her commercial Charolais cows...and got pure white ones...she must be the exception!

    sonny deuce

Garybob, What we've calved out so far are actually daughters of our Sonny son, Canasta, and they are fantastic! Beautiful udders, lots of milk, good feet and legs and keeping themselves in excellent shape. For this reason, we are breeding and keeping every one of his daughters this year. Of...

    Shothorn breeding advice

Thanks NHR. Maverick does calve really easily on heifers, and seems to click really well with Sonny/Trump Influence cattle. If you would like more info, there is a bit more here http://www.luckyspringsfarms.com/html/maverick.html or you can PM me!

    sonny deuce

We haven't used Sonny Duece, but from the original Sonny, our birthweights ranged from 92 to 106 pounds from cows. Ours have had nice slender heads and no shoulder, although they do have lots of top even as calves. We had no calving difficulties, the calves were up and chasing their moms around...

    Farm Therapy

I think this is probably very true. There's something very calming about working with animals. And nothing like hopping on the back of a horse and just going somewhere to blow off some steam! Increased crime rates in urban centres sort of supports this theory - not just because you know your...

    Favorite steer

Very nice steer, Fluffer. What is his pedigree, if you don't mind me asking?

    Calving question??

I'm not sure I'm a big fan of the 'my breed is a...and they always...' mentality, no matter what breed you have. Fluffer didn't get big calves because it was an Angus - they got them because it was the wrong Angus (of course, not with their knowledge). We all have our breed of choice and...

    Thank you cowboy

We dip with Hibitane Teat Dip - its a very mild disinfectant used in dairies that seems to work pretty well. Granted, things are still very frozen when we calf, but we might have one case of Navel Ill a year out of 90 calves.

    What is your farm logo?

Its been a while since I've used a PC...so I found this: http://graphicssoft.about.com/cs/general/ht/winscreenshot.htm Hope it helps!

    What is your farm logo?

RSC, Its a flash logo, so the only way to get it is to do a screen capture...Just don't try to use it on anything printed from this - It will be low quality and fuzzy - but it will work okay for anything online.

Clubby genetics for the beef industry?

Agreed, C-Cross! No dissing! There is likely a large number of purebred cattle that are non-functional, pampered, number-fudged specimens as well that should not be going into the commercial herd either...but because people can get them sold as a bull, they don't bother to cut what should be...

Clubby genetics for the beef industry?

Simtal, I do see the point you are making. Some clubby genetics translate very well into feedlot cattle...but for some, I question the fertility, foraging ability and general functionality of these cattle if they are to be promoted as 'commercial'. Some have single-trait selected for show ring...

    How PETA targets kids

I am relieved to see the piece of literature that SRU posted was actually against PETA though. That's a first that I've seen - And it looks as long and as expensive to produce as something PETA would put out - so its nice to see someone putting the time and funding into a document disclosing a...
