How are MAB Cows Performing in the Pasture

I have my eye on a couple heifers for my daughter. A couple of them have sires and dams known for producing females that become very good mothers. However, one we like was sired by MAB.  I would like to know how MAB cows are performing in the pasture.  Are they doing a good job raising their calves?

Show Steer Very Sick, While Waiting On Lab Work, I'm Looking For Advice

Well some tests results are in on the steer. The calf tested positive for BVD. Vet wants to notch his ear and send it to OSU and verify if he is a carrier (personally infected) or if he caught it at the show.

Show Steer Very Sick, While Waiting On Lab Work, I'm Looking For Advice

I have a tube of Probios at home. When I hear from the vet regarding the test results, I will see if he has some stronger probiotics.

Show Steer Very Sick, While Waiting On Lab Work, I'm Looking For Advice

Well, I am still waiting on the lab results from the Vet/OSU. After five days of Baytril and Banamine, steer seems to be breathing pretty good and is getting around ok. I am having my animal chiropractor come over today to look over him to make sure there isn't anything structurally causing him...

Show Steer Very Sick, While Waiting On Lab Work, I'm Looking For Advice

Possum Trot Ranch, thanks for mentioning Acidosis. I have been reading about it and he seems to have a lot of the symptoms except his manure doesn't meet the description of one with acidosis (no signs of brain damage so that is good). I have called my vet but he is out working cattle and is...

Show Steer Very Sick, While Waiting On Lab Work, I'm Looking For Advice

Sorry about not replying to those trying to help me with my kids sick steer, was away from the computer all weekend. The steer is drinking and eating grass pretty good but not too interested in grain. He acts hungry, follows me to the feeder but only eats grain for a little bit. His diarrhea...

Show Steer Very Sick, While Waiting On Lab Work, I'm Looking For Advice

We took my daughter's prospect steer to the state fair this past weekend. Three days after bringing the steer home I noticed him laying around a lot and moving around real slow. I assumed he was just sore from the show so I gave him some banomine. When I got home Wednesday from work I noticed...

Believe In Me Prospect Steer for Tulsa/KC- Undecided on showing or selling him

No I haven't sold him. After working on him this past weekend, I realized how much work he still requires, not halter broke enough and decided to take him off the market.  I just don't want anyone to get themselves in a situation we were in this past year, buy a show calf that was not showable. ...

Believe In Me Prospect Steer for Tulsa/KC- Undecided on showing or selling him

Tallcool1 and hevmando. Thanks for commenting and liking the calf. Your comments make this decision even harder. I will talk to my wife and kids again about keeping him. If they all go against me, I probably will only have one choice and that is sell him.  Until I make my final decision (if...

Believe In Me Prospect Steer for Tulsa/KC- Undecided on showing or selling him

Update: just learned and confirmed it through family that raised the calf, that the red steer discussed in the thread is a Believe In Me not a Monopoly. Sorry for confusion. This past year my 2 children that are old enough to show have been working and showing 5 calves. After talking things...

Pic of my daughter's Heat Wave show steer at 9, 11 and 14 months

I know the calf and my daughter aren't on the same page yet. This past week is the first time we have shown him since September. My daughter hasn't worked a stick on him much at all the past couple of months. When she works on him she usually just works his hair. She has been focusing on her...

Below is the pic we took while in the waiting area. I think it shows his pasterns differently, in a good way.

Pic of my daughter's Heat Wave show steer at 9, 11 and 14 months

Knabe, thanks for advice on working the area and ensuring it is dry before going into the ring.  I don't know if this is impacting the picture a little bit but he has a tendency to not put all his weight back on whichever back rear foot my daughter just adjusted with her show stick.  I don't...

Pic of my daughter's Heat Wave show steer at 9, 11 and 14 months

Tallcool1 and chambero, thanks for replying and positive comments. The reason I said 1250 is I have been told that the worse thing we could do is turn him into a sloppy fat steer. He has a really nice finish on him now, so I am trying to push him hard and just let him cruise right now. Currently...

Pic of my daughter's Heat Wave show steer at 9, 11 and 14 months

Thanks for the tip CAB. I am not a fitter at all, so pictures will help me see what you and Knabe are talking about. My family and I normally have some help from a couple kids from the local college judging team but they are away on Christmas break. We just sheened him up real good and blew him...

The good news Will, about the cold temps here in Oklahoma, is it sure is good for growing hair.  ;D Just trying to think positive.

Pic of my daughter's Heat Wave show steer at 9, 11 and 14 months

When my dad brought him home, I was a little concerned with his age but now I am thinking his youthful look/fresh look will help him when the final show gets here in March and is competing against the older bigger calves.
