Pic of my daughter's Heat Wave show steer at 9, 11 and 14 months

We would like for him to have a little more flex in his pastern than he does. The best part about his walk is how wide he walks and he covers his tracks.

Pic of my daughter's Heat Wave show steer at 9, 11 and 14 months

Over the past couple of years I have asked for some advice regarding a couple of my kids calves. Instead of posting a question, I just wanted to give you all an update/chance to see how my daughter's first market steer is progressing and get your opinion on how he has grown. The following pics...

Need tips on how to prevent daughter's heifer from becoming broad chested

I appreciate the compliments on the heifer. I put her out in our pasture after Tulsa to stretch her legs, eat some grass and cut her grain big time, just be a cow for a little while. The plan I was told to follow was to do that for a couple weeks and then get her back on full feed a two weeks...

Need tips on how to prevent daughter's heifer from becoming broad chested

My daughter showed her heifer at the Tulsa State Fair and got second out of 11. I think this heifer could be very successful in the show ring and become a great cow for us. My biggest concern is I don't want to do anything that could cause her to become broad chested. At this time she isn't...

Thinking About Using Bedding Pellets - Are They Better Than Shavings?

Chambero, thanks for letting me know how you use the pellets. How thick does the layer of pellets need to be?

Thinking About Using Bedding Pellets - Are They Better Than Shavings?

I have always used shavings as bedding at all the shows my kids attend but I want to try something different because I am having trouble finding good fluffy shavings in my area.  All seem to be either very large flakes that don't pack well no matter how much I wet them down, or too small and...

    eye candy

My kids showed two Eye Candy steers the past two years and both did exactly what others are saying. They both looked great and very powerful as young calves but as they got older they seemed to looser their power and then go off feed around the 1100 mark. Bother were very dostile, big pets...

    steer soundness

SMO, thanks for the kind words about my kids steer.  My kids haven't shown our two steers yet because Oklahoma really doesn't have any summer shows. We will be showing them next week at our County Fair and then the following weekend at the OKC State Fair.  I guess we will see what a couple...

    steer soundness

I have a steer that does exactly the same thing. I have been told it is caused by his pastern not being exactly right/sound. When he walks he reaches up and almost touches his front feet but he barely misses his other hind leg and seems to roll a little on his back feet.  Seems to be getting...

    Open Cows/Hefiers

A friend of ours has around 200 head and he usually gets 80% of his AIs to stick. This year less than 50% stuck but at least he has some very good clean up bulls. The weird thing is the majority of the cows that didn't stick were AId with semen bought from one company. Also, the ones that did...

    Feed question

I live not too far from the Luther Mill and used to feed their show feed. It seemed as though it didn't have enough power in it, at least for my kids steers. I switched to some need feed made in Harrah at N&R Feed (mill is directly in the center of town and was recently reopened by a family that...

    Calming agent

I haven't used it on a daily basis but I have used Focus prior to shows and during shows.  It is a natural liquid supplement. Many different vendors ant our local shows sale it. My calves seemed to respond well to it. Doesn't put them to sleep, just kind of takes the edge off.

    Exiss vs 4 Star

We have a 4 star that is 21 years old has it was originally only used for show cattle . Once my brother, sister and myself graduated (1998) it has been used for everything, cattle, small tractors, horses, etc. The trailer is still very good shape, especially after an acid wash. Issue: Daughter's show heifer acts like she wants to hurt my kids

I appreciate you all replying to my post. I tend to lean to letting her go to pasture but I really don't want to give up on her. It looks as though my only choice is to put the animal in an environment (squeeze chute, alley, etc) that will allow my kids to work on her and be safe.  If the heifer...

Issue: Daughter's show heifer acts like she wants to hurt my kids

I need help with my daughter's show heifer. This particular heifer usually lets me come up to her in the pasture and scratch her ears, pet her and put a halter on her. Once I halter her, she gets a bad attitude (tries to push me with her head).  Once I tie her up with the other calves, she will...

New Pics Of My Kids Show Calves

We worked on the calves last night and afterwards I took some photos. Since we don't have any shows in our area until September, I thought I would post them and have you all pick your favorites. The first photo is a heifer out of I am Legend. Second heifer is out of Monopoly. Third heifer is out...

2 Steers Out of the Same Heat Wave Son and Half Sister of Same Bull

Thanks Muddy Creek, AOK and DLD for commenting. All three calves came from Dean Kephart/K-Bar Ranch. We are excited about the steer in the second pic. He is changing a lot right now, putting on a lot of muscle. Saying this, those that have seen the steers up close seem to think the steer in the...

2 Steers Out of the Same Heat Wave Son and Half Sister of Same Bull

After looking over my kids show calves last night, I thought it would be a good idea to show pictures of three of them because all three are related. The two steers are out of the same Heat Wave Son bull (I think they have a lot of they same characteristics).  The third pic is a heifer that is...

    Pray for Moore, OK

The families that were devastated by this event, need all the prayers they can get.  It is just heart breaking, sickening, etc.....(words can't describe) what happend to those kids that were in the school that took a direct hit. Many teachers that made it and those that perished are hero's. They...
