Calves in cooler losing barrel shaped stomach. Need tips to keep them full.

Okay, I started putting my kids show calves in our new cooler a little over a week ago and I noticed a big change in their stomach size.  Their stomachs are not as big as they were when they first started going in the cooler.  At night they get to roam the pasture and I have a round bale of...

    Hay Prices in your area

My family owns a farm in central Oklahoma and has been raising Alfalfa since the mid 40's.  The Alfalfa and seed we raise is drought hardy but it is really stressed right now for water and this cutting is going to be slim (it never recovered from last year's drought, submoisture is too low)...

Steer with bruised foot/hoof - tips to help it heal are needed

Hello all.  This past weekend I had my kids show calves hooves trimmed.  The person that trimmed the hooves was not impressed at all with the condition of their hooves.  It has been 65 days since we trimmed them last but I guess the person did not do a good job.  Due to the hooves needing a lot...

    Cool Room Question

At first we were going to pour a stem wall for the cooler to sit on and then pour the floor.  The concrete guy recommended pouring it all at once/ monolithic pour.  The cooler is setting next to the edge of the concrete slab and anchored into the concrete.

    Honor Show Chow Finishing Touch

Used it last year and decided not to use again this year.  It worked okay on our market steer last year and a couple of heifers that needed some finish but there were a few things I didn't like.  One was the amount of molasses.  During the winter months the bags turned to concrete.  Two, I hated...

    Cool Room Question

A couple of individuals I know dug out an area about 2 feet deep.  They filled it back up in this order: approximately 8 inches of gravel, then 8 inches of sand, thin layer of lime, 8 inches of cedar fibers.  The floors soak up the urine very well and the lime helps eliminate the urine smell.  I...

Another OYE, another disappointing ending but I am still proud of my family!

Thanks coachmac.  Your right, I have heard the RAH RAH stuff. That stuff might help a little the first time but not so much the second time.  This calf was definitely better than the Angus calf we showed last year but some how the same judge liked it less.  Last year's calf was 3rd out of 12 and...

Another OYE, another disappointing ending but I am still proud of my family!

Well after a few days to let the steam off, I decided to go ahead and post a picture of my son's Eye Candy Angus (50%) market steer.  Many of you have seen pictures of him on this site and some asked for a picture of him once it was totally fitted.  Unfortunately despite all the attention and...

Eye Candy Market Steer Almost Ready For State - Thoughts (UPDATED PIC)

Took a picture of my son's Eye Candy steer while he was being clipped up for OYE this weekend.  Just wanted to show you how he looks now that he isn't a hairball any more.

    OYE cattle barns

DLD, you are absolutely right.  The wash racks for cattle were incredibly bad.  You have ones with potholes so big calves could disappear in them.  Then you have the newer ones that become hazardously slick because they didn't rough up the concrete.  Despite OYE being one of the largest shows...

    Rubber Mulch or Cedar Fiber?

I forgot to mention one other thing.  My cooler is setting on a concrete pad built specifically the way Cool Calf recommended.  I like the idea of rubber because it will have more cushion and I can wash it down every evening.  If I do this with the cedar fiber, I have to replace it quite often.

    Rubber Mulch or Cedar Fiber?

I have been talking to the folks that make the Cool Calf Walk-In Coolers about bedding for my walk-in cooler because I would like to use a product that isn't very dusty.  They said the new thing being used in coolers is rubber mulch.  He has heard from quite a few folks that it works great.  I...

    Keeping a halter on- Suggestions?

Tie a knot in the rope halter just a few inches from their nose.  You can use it for gripping and they won't be able to work the rope off their nose because there isn't enough slack. You will still be able to take it off by slipping it off their ears first.

Two questions regarding our new steer out of "One & Only"

If time is all he needs, I have plenty of that because he won't show until April.

Two questions regarding our new steer out of "One & Only"

Yes, he is finicky from his front legs forward.  I can rub all over him from his shoulders back and he will just stand there.  He had never tried to kick anyone until last night and he didn't do that until we started clipping his neck.  Also, when I touch his front end he wants to jump in the...

Two questions regarding our new steer out of "One & Only"

Last month I purchased two steers that will be shown at OYE next year.  One is out of Eye Candy and the other is out of One & Only.  The Eye Candy steer is like a puppy.  My 9 and 10 year old kids love messing with it.  The One & Only steer is pretty calm but he hates his front end/neck to be...

Eye Candy Market Steer Almost Ready For State - Thoughts (UPDATED PIC)

Thanks for the comments.  I too, can't wait to see him clipped up. RankCattleCo - We have always had a little issue with his front end, mainly the lower part.  His neck up high is really clean , it looks a lot different right now due to the hair. WRC and RAnkCattleCo - His Dam is a Registered...

Eye Candy Market Steer Almost Ready For State - Thoughts (UPDATED PIC)

I took some pictures of my sons market steer this afternoon.  He is out of Eye Candy.  You got to love his hair.  We didn't make the sale last year at the State show with my sons first steer (1st alternate) and we are hoping for better results this year.  I posted pics of him when he was just...

Opinions on feed rations made with SunGlo Show Calf Supplement 35-B

My brother purchased a grainery/feed store recently.  I would like to have him mix me up a ration so I can buy bulk and save a little $$.  He is a SunGlo Dealer so I was thinking about using one of the rations that Sunglo recommends for steers and heifers.  They are as follows: Steer Developer...
