    Help, can't keep ear tags in

    Well, I like to use Y-tex tags. They have a hard plastic collar where the button goes through and they never come apart. We've lost tags when twine has cut through the button, and the odd one where it has ripped the ear out, but never from them popping apart.

    Well, as soon as they are born we check the sex. Guess that's not really necessary, but we do tag heifers one color and steers another. If it is cold and we didn't get mama into the barn before the birth we will usually move them into the barn. Might cover the ears and if it is really cold might...

    Exactly, and when you are sorting them at home to go to different pastures it is so much easier when the cow and the calf have the same tag #. It is still easy to make mistakes, but easier to figure out what is wrong.

    Cows simply have a #, nothing special about it, and we reuse both tags and #'s. Any replacement heifers just get the next unused #. When we cull a cow, or lose one the # is then open for another animal. For individual ID all our cows either have a tattoo or a RFID tag, which I really don't use...
