    Awards for th free cattle.

Beebe I am ashamed to say that we beat you to his best heifer out of him... I will post pictures as soon as a get a few good ones of her. They placed her as their number one herd replacement heifer before they got the th test results back. I hate the idea of having to test everything out of...

    Awards for th free cattle.

I like the idea but I really haven't seen a clear purpose for it out there... as far as i am concerned shows should be about functionality and about producing the best functioning cattle possible (doesn't matter if you want them for replacements or the feedlot). Say you take a steer from...

    Bull Rental

We rented a bull last year and paid $20 per cow bred. we ran him on roughly 30-40 head of purebreds so 600-800 for the breeding season. Seemed as reasonable to us, but based on the bull you could probably raise or lower the price.

Cidr's do you use yours more than once?

We didn't even buy the first ones we used. An old farmer didn't like that his son only used them once. We were told to use a cold water rinse and let them dry on newspaper or paper grocery bags (out of the sun of course). The  though was cleaning them too thoroughly would make them ineffective...

    Nodak King's Tradition

Absolutely librarian! Another strong example is clippers jubilee. Although I will say I think clipper king of USA works extremely well with Haumont. Proper genetic testing and linebreeding him would be interesting. Her is an article from March 1973 issue of shorthorn world. I don't know if th...

We are changing our herd away from Shorthorn

Olson is right and it may be too late for national recognition but read the second part of this article by Harold Thieman. http://www.yydurhamcattle.com/past4.html Not that anyone respected the man for cattle but this was published in 1967 and we didn't listen to one of the most influential...

    Nodak King's Tradition

You know it is sad to say the line-bred herds are going to the wayside. Seems like every one is breeding to what is "popular." When very well they may have produced a bull just as good in their own pasture that would have put consistency back into their herd. Now i am not knocking these "big...

    2015 Shorthorn Bulls

Here is DMH Private Selection ET. He is a leader 21 son out of a Haumont cow. Obviously the maternity of Haumont is sound and can't really dog leader 21. I found him to be impressive. Everything in the 2012 heifer calves are daughters http://dmhoffroggecattle.com/hcalves.html

Potential genetic defect in Shorthorn cattle

Here is my stance on the issue. We have 1000s of bulls that are carriers of the various traits. The more you use those bulls in your herd the more you have to test. Individually in my opinion if we allowed registration of carriers for another few years and cut off all registration of carriers or...

    Shorthorn Country Issues

Shorthorn world went from either 1912 or 1919 all the way to 1975 or 76. So there seems to be an overlap in issues possibly. I am currently at ksu and they have most of the shorthorn world available by request from storage. I may not be able to find anyone willing to give up issues but if I...

    Shorthorn Country Issues

I am looking for old Shorthorn Country Magazines. I am not sure when the first was published but i would like to collect at least through 1990-2000. Any Issues I get I will most likely be digitizing what ever i can collect and If i can get permission from Shorthorn Country to make the old issues...

Sorry my bad... we have strayed from the original topic a wee bit.

    Bulls

Dual purpose is no more than a title now even the people who are doing the big dual registry push must recognize this simply because there is a difference in what bull you would use for milk as apposed to beef. The milking Society has actually kept records on feedlot before the shorthorn...

Some help with understanding TH and PHA

Ok so the way i was told it works is fairly simple and see if spacing works right for this so you have your bull and cow both have imput into the calf obviously and the post above is right you have a 25% chance to get an active th or pha animal if you breed 2 carriers. here is how it works...

    Bulls

First off great posts! Cattle breeding is interesting... Yes people hold cattle based on their own personal preferences in what they want. Some are shooting for show some are shooting for bigger or smaller. Just because it is native doesn't mean it is pure you have even more chance of error the...
