Not the way you want to find a calf

The FIRST time we used our new Stampede squeeze chute, I forgot to close one of the neck-access doors, and the next calf, a 300 lb heifer, squirted through and hip-locked.  Couldn't push her back- her ribs wouldn't let her go back; tried flipping her on her side and pulling her out like a...

    Sire to daughter line breeding

Old base SimAngus herd here was pretty tightly linebred for 15 years (read: minimal management - though I was selectively choosing the homebred bulls that were kept.)  Had more than a few sire-daughter matings, and some of those were equally as tightly bred for a generation or two before that. ...

    Costs of certain vet charges???

Females have outnumbered males in the veterinary ranks in the USA since 2009. Most recent releases from AVMA indicates that women comprise 78% of veterinary classes across the country - and this has been pretty consistent for at least the past 20 years,  but men still predominate the food-animal...

    Costs of certain vet charges???

bim, I'm an old food-animal practitioner, but feel fortunate to have been able to escape and be able to watch from the sidelines for the past 20-25 years, as the face of veterinary medicine and animal agriculture has changed significantly. There have been claims of a 'shortage of food animal...

    question about simmi cows milk

Pink, or even bloody colostrum is not necessarily a bad thing - may merely reflect some bleeding as a result of udder edema and/or minor injury to the udder as a result of engorgement prior to calving. Better keep a close eye on this calf for navel ill/joint ill or other infections.  Unless he...

    High dollar generating cows

They leave here - but if they're a well-liked old granny who's done a good job, rather than sending 'em to the local salebarn where the cretins working the pens and ring whale on her with sticks and yell at her, we just haul her directly to the local custom processor and have her ground into...

    Costs of certain vet charges???

bim, There's absolutely no shortage of veterinarians - and no shortage of food animal practitioners; see details on the AABP study and report here: http://dairybusiness.com/features/2011-06-23/aabp-report-addresses-veterinarian-shortage-perception There are areas of the country that are...

    Costs of certain vet charges???

Ryan, I'm with you on that point - no one "has" to take on $300K in student loans, and I have to question the judgement of those who do.  Had a former student who couldn't get into a school here in the states, so she went to one of those Caribbean schools; have no idea what her debt was, but...

    Costs of certain vet charges???

Not every veterinary college is as 'affordable' as TAMU - Tufts, for instance is close to $42K/yr for tuition alone. If you're a non-resident student, it's significantly higher, even at some of the less costly colleges, and recently some of the CVMs have been increasing class size, with larger...

    Costs of certain vet charges???

I don't see how this younger generation of veterinarians are gonna make it... average indebtedness, just associated with veterinary school, is running around $170-$180K; have seen stories of some that have taken out loans in the $250-$300K range.  And, some have student debt attached to...

AI'ing and vacinating at same time

If you're using MLV products, it's a no-no;  the 60-day rule would be my preference.  Inactivated virals shouldn't be an issue. http://www.caes.uga.edu/Publications/pubDetail.cfm?pk_id=8065#IBR

    captain obvious x shiver heifer

SC, Have had several CO calves here, out of 2-5 y.o. ANxSimAngus cows - no problems.  Have not used any SH bulls except Waukaru Goldmine 2109 on virgin heifers, so far - and they get here OK. It's not always the bull's fault - the cow contributes half the genetics.  First calf crop from the...

    One eyed jack simmi bulk

Right, FSR. We're a commercial cow-calf outfit - no showring stuff, and I seriously doubt anyone would ever be interested in any of my cattle as a show prospect.  I'm unlikely to pay above $40-$50/unit - and much prefer to be in the $20-$25 range. That said, my wife is on a tear about JF...

    One eyed jack simmi bulk

Have used his sire, Shear Pleasure; like the calves so far, more to come. Will be using him again. Have no idea why one-eyed Jack came out of the gate at $100/unit - nothing about him that would make me spend that $$$, over his sire - or almost any other baldy on the market.

    Needle Size

No, chambero. BQA guidelines are for all ages - not just calves headed for the feedlot. From the BQA guideline documents: "All products labeled for intra-muscular (IM) use shall be given in the neck region only (no exceptions, regardless of age)." Virtually ALL cattle will potentially be...

what's your pick of PB Shorthorn bull to use on heifers?

Quite a few possibilities - and recent threads here cover a bunch of them. The one I've used enough to feel absolutely confident of is Waukaru Goldmine 2109.  Short gestation(271 day avg.), 12.4 CED, -1.8 BW, both with accuracies above .80; but has WW/YW above breed average.  They come slender...

    Shorthorn for commercial use

We've used several SH sires. Waukaru bulls - Goldmine 2109, Coppertop 464, Gold Card 5042, Orion 2047; A&T Captain Obvious, RS 034. All have worked well.  Goldmine is dependable calving ease; I'm comfortable with him even on average Angus heifers.  No calving issues with any of the others above...

    Shorthorn for commercial use

Doing it here in western KY. SH sires over high %Angus cows bred up from SimAngus base.  Coming back on those ANxSH cows with (mostly black) Simmental bulls.  Well-pleased with the SH-sired calves - as a commercial operation, we're not going for big hair, big bone, freaky neck extension...
