    $EN in Angus Cattle EPD's

http://www.angusbeefbulletin.com/articlePDF/By%20the%20numbers%2001_09%20ABB.pdf And, you've pretty well pegged it.  Most (not all) high positive $EN cattle will be smaller mature size and with lower milk epds. For a reason. Milk is not a maternal trait, it's a growth trait - there's a feed...

    Cow died

As previously noted, a necropsy examination would possibly have provided an answer. 6 days out...ruptured uterine artery unlikely; not unheard of, but not high on my list of possibilities. Retained twin &/or metritis bad enough to kill the cow...I'd have anticipated you noticing her not...

    1912 Ayrshire cow

Beautiful.  I've had a love affair with red & white dairy cattle for decades. Have a friend in NY whose family has milked & bred Ayrshires for generations, alongside Holsteins, Guernseys(and Dexters!).  She is perhaps the most accomplished herdsman(person) I've ever known - acutely atuned to...

    Haylage vs regular hay

Word of caution; have seen several outbreaks of botulism in cattle being fed haylage.  Most recently...wheat haylage.

    Simmental Breeders, please help

Larissa, Don't have any calves on the ground at the moment, but we're currently using WS All IN W111 as AI sire for our Simmental and ANxSH heifers.  Had been using Triple C Bettis S72H for several years - and they came small...but growth was not as anticipated from his pedigree or epd profile.

    polled animals

It's conceivable that a spontaneous mutation of the horn gene to polled could result in two horned parents producing  polled offspring. There was a discussion here on SP about the Shorthorn bull GS Thunder 6E 6J a while back, which carries the 'sx' notation on his registration number - polled...

    polled animals

CSI, I've seen similar articles, indicating that most bison in the USA have some bovine genetics behind them. Case in point - 'white-faced' bison, as seen here: http://www.pbase.com/janmyers/image/130133201 Has at least some Hereford(?) genetics at least 14 generations back...if they'd used a...

    polled animals

Polled Holsteins & Jerseys been around for a while. I used to follow the polled & R&W Holsteins pretty closely... was a big fan of Hanover-Hill Triple Threat & the Burket Falls program... Burket Falls has been breeding polled (and R&W) Holsteins since at least back in the 1960s...

    finished fall calving

Kiblercattle beat me to the punch on the disposition deal - NW is well-noted for siring less-than-desirable disposition - and your bull has him on top & bottom?!? Can't help you at all on the 'show' deal, but you should be able to find an AN sire that'll accomplish that AND bring some docility...

Young calf - Has anyone ever seen this before? What do you think it is?

I can't figure out what you're trying to show about the eyes, but that short little muzzle and prominent domed cranium makes me wonder about some neurologic defect/anomaly...hydrocephalus or something similar.

    what do you think?

KF, Spring-calving herd here has half the cow numbers of the fall group, but Toby wanted spring-born calves. High-percentage Simmental cows were dedicated to breeding to SM bulls, and farm manager(my wife) was not willing to back off on those. So... the two Shorthorn sires were each mated to...

    calving ease shorthorn bull

True dat, Okotoks. From the OPs name, I'm guessing they're familiar with Simmental epds, and since the Shorthorns are now on the same base as the Simmentals and Red Angus... the learning curve may not be as steep as it was for me 5-6 years ago.

    what do you think?

Good looking! The Jordans wanted some idea how Orion 2047would work in a commercial herd and recruited us to do a progeny-test breeding trial, comparing Orion to his mgs, Coppertop 464, whom we'd been using (and liking!) on our cows for several years. Test bred a group of mostly 3-6 y.o...

    calving ease shorthorn bull

There's a LONG (80 something pages) thread on here somewhere...Shorty Heifer Bulls... or something like that.  You can learn a lot about the breed - and bulls - from it; I sure did. Commercial herd here - no showring stuff, and no inclination to breed for that;  Waukaru Goldmine 2109 has proven...

Anyone ever successfully treat a calf with tetanus??

I'll weigh back in on this one.  Lost a nice 4-mo heifer to tetanus last fall; multi-valent Clostridial bacterin/toxoid that we were using at that time did not contain tetanus toxoid.  I've since switched to one that does. Wife called me to come home from work - that the bigger cows had...

    Cloning bulls

"Why are the epd's so different on full brothers? " I've wondered the same thing - though it could just be genetic roll of the dice; my two sons are very different phenotypically. Have used two full-sib/flushmate Simmental bulls here: Triple C Bettis S72J - ASA 2341670 Triple C Singletary S3H -...

Surgical castration after crimping need advice!!

tkeefe, Playing devil's advocate here... 1.  DID veterinarian #1 know that 'crimping' was not allowed?  Just because your 4-H board has disallowed it, did the word actually get to the vet?  If no one ever told him...just complained behind his back...how would he know? 2. Did YOU tell...

Surgical castration after crimping need advice!!

Hmm.  Not sure that I agree with your 4-H board. In the wrong hands, crimping with Burdizzos may not be reliable - but some folks can't count to 'two' and screw up banding, too.  I've castrated calves of all sizes with the Burdizzo emasculatome, almost exclusively, for nearly 40 years; done...

Any other SP members in vet school?

WarDamnEAGLE!, I grew up at Auburn, out in the Farmville community.  Got my BS there in '81, DVM in '85. Worked as a student deiner in the necropsy lab from '77 to '82 Most of my old profs are no longer there, but some of the long-timers (faculty AND staff) are still hanging in there - some...
