    Judge underestimated my steer...

I would guess the sea of blacks had nothing to do with it.  Looking at him, I would agree with the judge saying he is too light.  Most of the finished cattle will fall somewhere between 1250-1350 lbs.  If I were to guess, I wouldn't have thought an unfinished steer would hang the best carcass. ...

    Judges on the Mic

If you are talking about a prospect steer show, I would say structure is fairly important.  If you are talking a fat steer show, they only need to be sound enough to walk onto the truck and back off at the packers.  As far as what is going on at home, I was under the impression a steer show was...

Alphatoxin and the midwest corn crop

The biggest issue with testing in field is the same as hand-shelling a sample for moisture, the whole field is going to be different than the little bit you sample.  The aflatoxin only affects the grain, so in theory the silage would dilute the grain down with the rest of the plant and aflatoxin...

Alphatoxin and the midwest corn crop

The issue with distillers grains is that you take the starch out of the kernel, and are left with the part of the kernel where the aflatoxin is located.  Thus, you have concentrated the aflatoxin into the distillers grains, instead of having it in the whole grain.  It can kill all types of...

    Anyone ever graze soy beans?

There is actually a crop called cowpeas, don't want anyone to get confused.  Why would you spend the money to swath and bale, then haul them off the field to where the cows are to feed, then turn around and haul the manure out of wherever you feed the cows, when you could just put a fence around...

    Anyone ever graze soy beans?

You should not have trouble with Nitrate levels in the soybeans.  They also will not be that high of protein levels if they have gone into reproductive stages (blooming and putting on pods).  Think about alfalfa, we want to cut it around 10% bloom to find a happy medium between tonnage and...

    What Kids Pick Up On

Was grilling supper tonight and went inside to get some stuff, when I came back out my almost five year old had put a rope halter on our border collie and our almost two year old had the show stick and was scratching his belly.  The dog was just standing there letting them do it.  We have not...

Weaning Feeder Calves at 3 months old?

I think what ZNT is getting at, and I am making an assumption which we all know what happens when we do this, is the fact that, after a certain time frame, the calf is inefficient at gaining off the cow.  This isn't always the case, but that is why creep feeding usually more than pays for...

    Ryan Cotton

Are you going to change which cattle you bring to the show depending on how he likes them?

NC - Questions about Kansas State U

RidinHeifer brings up a good point.  I know a few kids that went the route of being pre-approved.  That, to me, seems to be the best route.

    farm facebook pages

Ours is www.facebook.com/baalmancattlecompany  Just got pics posted from working calves on Saturday.  The grass looks pretty bleak, but the calves look pretty good.  They better as much creep as they're going through.

NC - Questions about Kansas State U

I was in no way suggesting she take a dive, there are very good schools she could attend and still get a good education.  FHSU in Hays comes to mind.  If she is very serious and committed, KSU is a great place to go.  They do have some issues:  Biology is teach yourself off a computer and the...

NC - Questions about Kansas State U

I have my agronomy degree from KSU, liked the school, the vet program seems to be pretty good.  It looked like to me, at least when I was there, your best shot for getting excepted was to go to another school, possibly a smaller school where you have a better shot at getting good grades, and...

Who do you think is the Ultimate "Cow"boy?

The very best cowboy I have ever known just passed away last week.  His name was Ernie Love, and he was the best all around hand I have ever know.  Won his last bull riding at 61, his last roping at 70+, as well as day working in the Flint Hills most of his life.  He ran a boarding barn for...

Grain prices. How high will they go ?

Nitrogen went up today, what do you know.  I realize in my line of work, that me saying the price will move may not mean much to some of you, however, what will I gain from posting that on this site?  I don't sell any fertilizer to any of you, nor do I plan to.  As far as 99/100 saying...

    Internships in Texas

How many businesses/individuals have you called?  I found that many places were willing to take on additional help if they knew you were interested in the industry if you just call and ask.  Make sure when you do you are always courteous, you never know what could come of a phone call.  I also...

Grain prices. How high will they go ?

Fertilizer only follows supply/demand principles so long as supply is tight.  When grain is moving as much as it is, fertilizer is bound to follow to some extent, always has, always will.  I work in the agronomy industry selling inputs, and all of our fertilizer guys are saying buy now, the...

Grain prices. How high will they go ?

AJ, we are talking about the same ethanol plant, as I live in Quinter.  It looked like to me the only thing them paying for milo seed to push production was get milo planted on some marginal acres, or acres that were going to be fallowed for wheat, but instead got planted to milo.

Grain prices. How high will they go ?

Our grain buyer is saying $10 corn minimum, local ethanol plant talking of shutting down for a couple months, and not contracting anymore distillers.  Ethanol plant said they could shutdown, sell the grain back that they already have bought, and make more money that way.  Interesting side note...

    Professional Fitters

I agree with Obie.  In Kansas, only the kids and family members can touch the animals at county and supposed to be State Fair.  But some of the parents/siblings are professional fitters.  Coincidentally, most of these kids are the ones that win, not because of the fit job, but because their...
