Google earth and water pivots out west

Fines the first season, don't lose the water rights until they consider you a "habitual abuser."  Something new that they are trying is to stretch it over a three year period, and give you X inches of rain over that 3 year period, that way if you get 1 year of really wet, then the next is dry...

Google earth and water pivots out west

I would disagree with a one of your points, pivots take much more than a couple hours to run around a full quarter, of which you are irrigating around 120 acres.  All irrigation water in Kansas is tightly controlled and you are only allowed to pump a certain number of acre inches/year, and have...

Cracked corn vs. Steamed rolled corn?

No, in Kansas, we harvest only the actual grain portion of the corn plant wet, then take it to the feedlots where it is cracked and packed in bunkers, similar to silage, but it is only the grain portion of the plant, not the whole plant like in silage.

Rank the toughest majors and state fairs

I would argue that at most state fairs, the top end would be competitive anywhere.  After about the top 5, I would think you could argue one state fair is tougher than the others.

It is soooo hot here... (compared to normal!)

110 today, 111 tomorrow, 102+ the next ten days, 15-25% humidity.  Corn is holding on, but no one knows how.  If we don't get a rain soon (there is none forecasted for next ten days), the corn will be done.  Already some talk of abandoning 1/2 circles to try to salvage just half as we can't keep...

    Opinions on young show persons

I agree with your post to some extent that there needs to be an age limit, however, I disagree with your statement that kids that young can't help take care of the animals.  I have a four year old daughter that goes with me every night to feed, and has her chores that she can do.  She waters the...

    Depressing

DEPRESSED??   Over five thousand years ago, Moses said to the children of Israel , "Pick up your shovels, mount your asses and camels, and I will lead you to the Promised Land." Nearly 75 years ago, (when Welfare was introduced) Roosevelt said, "Lay down your shovels, sit on your asses, and...

    Breeders near Ogallala Nebraska

Will be traveling to Ogallala for a business meeting the end of August, didn't know if there were any breeders close as we will have some time to kill in the evenings?

    Pasture Fertilization

Depending on how many tons of grass you're pulling off the field, the data I found says anywhere from 30-40# nitrogen, 5-8# Phosphorous, and around 30# Potassium/ton of hay removed.  I would agree with Willow and most others, I wouldn't think of applying fertilizer without a soil test.  I would...

    Pasture Fertilization

Why do you recommend the 34-0-0 without the agrotain and 46-0-0 with?  I also wouldn't think 20# P would do much of anything to help, as most grasses use much more P than this, especially if you are cutting the grass for hay and not returning any manure to it.

    ...........

No grain, out on pasture, with just a protein and mineral supplement.  Treated the same as everyone else who calved just fine to pure Shorthorn and a couple Salers bulls.  Heifer is a Full FlushXGringo.

    ...........

I realize anything can happen, and it could just be a fluke, but we cut a 110# heifer out of a first calver, that was bred to Rodman.  Mama still hasn't stood.  I'm just saying these "surefire" calving ease Angus can have some trouble too.

    Steer not gaining fast enough

300 lbs in 60 days equates to 5#/day.  Not impossible, but we are heading into some of the hotter months of the year.

    I-80 son named Road Trip

If you do the math, at $36,000, if you get 1/3 semen interest at $25/straw, is $8.33.  I then figured the net that you would get from sement sales to be roughly 1/2, so your looking at making around $4/straw sold.  Figures out to be around 9,000 straws to break even.  I don't know for sure, but...

Stockshow Confidential airing on RFD-TV tonight

It would be nice if it was later in the evening.  The sun doesn't set until almost nine, which means I'll be hard at it until at least then.  And back at it well before 9:30 the next morning.  Makes me think I should have got the DVR.

    Shorthorn Calves

Last two are mid-March, both bulls, BWF is out of a SH plus cow and our Sonny son, the red bull is out of the same Sonny son and a CCC Gold Rush cow.  You can't tell much by the pictures, but both the calves have come along really well.

    Shorthorn Calves

First three are all early January calves.  Next two are mid February, the roan heifer is out of a National Champion Salers bull and a first calf shorthorn heifer.  The bull is a Tuscaloosa X Revival that I bought as a pregnancy in Duis's sale.
