    cows on irrigated pasture

Not sure if Giant Bermuda is a perennial, but if it is I would pick something else.  With a perennial your biggest cost is going to be in getting it established, and then to tear it up to plant wheat I would think would not be very profitable.  There are a few guys around my area, NW Kansas...

    Denver 2012

We went to a restaurant when we were there, can't remember the name, some of you probably know better, had a tree growing up through the middle of the restaurant.  It is a little ways from the NWSS, but it is worth the drive, the steaks are delicious.  Also, they have been a junior livestock...

What is your 2012 bull lineup?

Shorthorns we will be breeding to Fringe or Exile.  The couple club calf cows we have will go to a charolais influenced to moderate them a little more, thinking Choppin Wood, True Grit, or The Situation.  Also thinking about Texas Twister.  The Shorthorn Pluses will go to Young Money.  All will...

    Shorthorn heifer question

Her starting bid was $10,000, about fell out of my chair when I saw it.  I figure they must not have wanted to sell her too bad.

    Help on Birth Weight

Not trying to be critical, but 25 lbs every two weeks is nowhere near 3.5 ADG.  It is less than 2.

    Needing to Downsize

I have a bwf cow that needs to be downsized.  She has good structure and has adequate bone, just feel like she is a little leggy.  Thinking about Eye Candy or Choppin Wood.  Also have a shorthorn plus that had a high selling steer for us last year out of a purebred shorthorn, looking for a...

    Yearling heifer problem

We are usually dry enough to not worry about it, but what about something like footrot?  I would consider having her feet trimmed also.

    Artificial insemination

Another thing that personally drives me nuts, and you are by far not the only one that does it, is poor grammar.  Your post have next to no punctuation, as well as very little capitalization.  If you are trying to compete in a very competitive world, to me, this is already a pretty big strike. ...

NAILE Open Shorthorn Show - a couple interesting facts.

9K isn't going to commercial cattleman either as most commercial guys I know won't pay more than $3500 for a bull, registered or not.  Also, I agree that until there is no discount at the salebarn for anything but black, shorthorns will not be a commercial cattlemans go to breed, even though...

    feed

Given the cost to crack/grind these feeds, I have to wonder why you would feed them whole?  You get so much more uptake of nutrients/protein from any of these feeds when they have been cracked/ground.  Don't know anything about feeding lima beans, however, would want to talk to a nutritionist...

NAILE Open Shorthorn Show - a couple interesting facts.

I heard a very good quote, possibly on here, about the linebreeding/inbreeding debate:  "If it works, it's linebreeding, if it doesn't, it's inbreeding."  Looking at all the Trump X Trumps that are winning, I have to wonder how many didn't work?  That said, we breed and show shorthorns, not...

    3 way carcass class

Why bother even having a show if this is going to be what your fair consist of?  Why not just have all the kids send the calves out to a feedlot and measure ADG there, than score the carcass and have them give a presentation?  That way it would take all the variables out.  I can see some merit...

You know you are from a small town when .......

What about when your school/town shuts down for all major high school sporting events.  We used to joke that you could rob every town in NW Kansas the weekend of state wrestling and no one would notice.

    Waco bull calf

Looks very good, had a waco heifer out of Duis's sale that had to be put down.  Got her feet stuck in something and tore them all up, couldn't be saved.

    raddish's

In my experience they will eat the tops after it has frozen, they will pass over the tops if able to before it freezes.  Radishes aren't going to put any nitrogen into the soil, only legumes can do that.  If you do turn cattle out on them after a freeze, don't stand too close behind, you might...

Wow ! This is amazing! Not cattle related

Will have to remember this next time I "think" I'm having a tough day.

    Feeding baled cornstalks.

I would not feed them without first taking a nitrate test.  The cornstalks in our part of the world are notorious for high nitrates.  That being said, have seen them fed just fine free choice.  If it is swathed and baled all the better, you get some corn, a little cob, and most of the leaves. ...

    Insurance

I figure if you don't have the money setting in an account to replace the animal if it dies, you better insure it.

Feed room and the pet mice that live there.......

I thought they were voodoo when my wife brought them home, but the electronic mouse repellers that plug into the wall have worked well for us.  We got ours at home depot.

In our fall calvers we had all heifers last year, and are on our way this year to do it again.
