    Sick steer- WWYD??

Vet just called, he’s getting me Baytril and Banamine. We went through this last year- he recommends giving the Baytril in the folds of skin near the tail head, which I hate because it looked awful last time for about 2 weeks. Not looking forward to the shots!

    Sick steer- WWYD??

Before I start, I am waiting for our vet to call me back. We got my daughter’s steer about 3 weeks ago. About a week in, I noticed he had a cough- nothing terrible just enough to notice. He’s also had a little bit of thick white snot on and off- not constant. Fast forward to today- he only ate...

    Everyday routine

Our routine depends on the day and time of year- we aren’t able to wash/rinse/tie up in the mornings once school starts- my husband and I both work. During the summer we feed early- usually by 6:30 and tie up for about 2 hours when they are done eating. Feed again in the afternoon between 3:30-4...

    Need Advice - Stubborn Steer

Slowly but surely he’s getting better. He got away from my daughter yesterday so I’m hoping he doesn’t get it in his head that he can get loose from her- I made the mistake for working him when he was still hungry- all he wanted was back in his stall to eat and that’s where he was going. He did...

    Need Advice - Stubborn Steer

Thank you- I appreciate both of your replies. We are taking it slow and being patient with him- no use in rushing it and ruining him in the process. Thanks again!!

    Need Advice - Stubborn Steer

We've had my daughter's county fair steer for a little over a week (trust me, I am taking that into consideration). He had been worked with prior to us getting him - rinsed and tied daily. He is pretty gentle and acts great other than when we try to walk him. He's right at 700 lbs. He pulls back...

    Scale options- suggestions/ideas needed

I am wanting to set up a set of scales at our barn before we get our next steer. We currently have a set of bars and the electronic display. What I need to do is purchase/build a platform and decide where to set the scales up at. I’m looking for ideas as to where the best place to set them up...

    PLEASE HELP! Sick steer...really worried

We took my daughter's steer to a show on Saturday. Starting Tuesday afternoon, he stopped eating his feed and hasn't ate any since - which is completely out of character for him. Yesterday he had a snotty nose and a lot of saliva coming from his mouth - temp was 105.6. Called the vet - he gave...

    DIY cattle Scales

We are wanting to set up scales at our barn. We want them to be the alley-way type, not permanent. We have everything but a platform at this point. We were using an old grooming chute but it finally bit the dust. Anyway, I’m looking for any and all suggestions as to the best way to do this. Has...

Feed is too dry.....what can I do?

The feed I just got is a lot dryer than it usually is. Our steer isn't eating it like he normally does. What can I add to it in order to help the dryness?

Anyone use a small automatic feeder?

I'm looking for a small automatic feeder that will release feed on a timer. I want one small enough for just one or two head of cattle. I'm trying to figure out a way to feed our steer in the afternoon on a regular schedule even when myself or my husband have to work late. Anyone have a...

    Advice on feeding a steer

Over the last 34 days he has gained 4lbs per day. With that being said- we don't have our own scales set up yet so that calculation is from his weight at two different shows. I know different scales can weigh differently, also first show was a morning show and second show was at night.

    Advice on feeding a steer

Here is a picture - let me know what you think - good or bad. I guess I'm worried about the weight mainly because of my daughter - she's only 8. He's calm for the most part - gets anxious at shows but has done better recently with the help of the Cruise Control Halter and Focus - both helped...

    Advice on feeding a steer

My daughter's county fair steer currently weighs 984 lbs. He is currently eating 20 lbs a day - mix of finisher, oats, cotton seed hulls and calf manna. About a month ago we started subbing a scoop of oats for a scoop of finisher to try and slow him down (he was getting three scoops of finisher...

    More advice please....

My daughter's steer (she's 8, this is her first year showing) has started kind of throwing his head at her and getting it down when she's walking him. He doesn't do this with me when I work him. I tried one of the clip in nose rings and he flipped- and he's usually calm. Would a pronged lead be...

Melatonin- how much and when to feed?

I want to start our steer on melatonin to see if it will help him calm down at shows- I just don't know when to feed it (morning or evening?) and how much. He's 850 lbs. also, is it ok to feed melatonin along with peace pellets? I only plan on feeding the melatonin a few days leading up to the...

Calf calm, peace pellets- any other ideas??

My daughter showed her steer for the first time yesterday. This was his first show and hers. At home he is great- we work him everyday, he's tied up for several hours at different times, etc. Yesterday he got spooked three times in the ring and got away from her. She got him back under control...

I need some advice for our steer

She has not been allowed to "baby" him by rubbing on him and scratching his head - I know what that can lead to. I usually tie him up for about 2-3 hours a day total - about 1 1/2 hours in the morning and about an hour before we work with him each evening. We just got back from the barn - I...

I need some advice for our steer

This will be my daughter's first year to show, she is 8. We've had her steer for about a little over a month now. He came to us pretty much broke and gentle. While he is still gentle and pretty calm most of the time, we are having an issue with him. When she's walking him, she has a hard time...
