"SCHOOL of HARD KNOCKS"...Contribute if U Can!

When trying to determine how cattle will feed out look at the thickness of their tail.Cattle with thin, small tails tend to be harder doing and not feed as well. Cattle with thicker tails tend to be easier fleshing and feeding. And also if you want to stay in the cattle business you can't fall...

    Too Small Framed?

I dont think they mind the 120# calves as long as they dont have to touch them. Deiter's were the kings at selling bulls with 120# + BW. Most commercial cattlemen (if not all) don't weigh their calves anyway so they probably wouldn't know how much one weighed if they didnt have to help it.

    DR Who

We have had luck breeding him to a handful of carefully selected simmy based 1st calf hfrs, but he sure isn't sure fire calving ease. We have never had a huge one out of him on any cow, but have helped a few on hfrs. He can work, but I wouldn't suggest breeding him to tooo many first timers.

    I Am Legend reports

we had close to 20 of them. Really didnt like them when they were born. Thought they looked to old school chi (tall and tight), but by sept. they looked really good. were not near as big as we thought they would be. Never had any runaways but sold 6 for avg of 2000

"Eye of the Storm" Denver display Bull

CAB and zach make good points. We to dabble with too many bulls, but then again we have a few more cows to play with so we take a chance on a few. I also just want to throw this out there (and i don't know why we do it) but when we try new bulls they don't get bred to the best cows, so if they...

    Wave Jammer

I was looking at the show circuit and saw a picture of WCC Wave Jammer. He is a clean HW son that I thought looked very impressive.Really soft in his appearance with loads of muscle. He actually looked like a breeding bull (so he probably won't work to sire "show calves"). I am just suprised I...

    Old Working Chute

spend the extra money and get a hydraulic. Easier on the cattle, you, and everything else. They all have there plus and minus, but they are all better then a manual IMO.

    Nurse Mate ASAP for Calves

This product is made here in SD over at Brookings (home of SDSU). We use it on any calves we pull and when the weather is wet and nasty we give every calf one. I guess it sure appears to get the calves up and going so it works for us.

    Strange Cattle Deaths

Walked out this morning and found a show hfr dead. She was laying in the middle of the pen and was still warm (it was -23 last night) so she hadn't been dead too long. Have no clue what happened they were running around playing last nite, so she might have slipped and broke her back or something...

    Old Working Chute

The way you describe the head gate it sound like what we call the calf strangler. In theory it is a good idea, but if it is what I think it is if you get a calf that pulls back they tend to choke then go down then you can't get the headgate open. Hopefully that is not what is on there.

    Suggestions and Improvements

Just a note your map showing pples location is off by about 300 miles. maybe it is just my profile, but i listed my town and the pin on the map is WAY off. tried to move the pin to the right location that didn't work either. I may just be dumb too. but great site. I agree if it aint broke dont...

    Too old to Castrate?

I personally think banding is more stress on the calves. I have seen calves restless for 3 days with the uncomforable band on. I look at it this way neither one is done pain free but I know I like my band aid ripped off fast not slow. JMO

    What Simmi Bull to use?

The Grizzly cattle that we have had and seen have all been really smooth made and stylish. They all have that "maternal" look to them. Clean jointed, deep flanked with some rib. Only had 6 ourselves and have seen close to 20-25 more, but they have all been very similar in type and kind. All of...
