    Mineral Program

Why do you want one with aureomycin? Milk increase? Disease prevention?... I have always seen it as an option but didn't know if the cost is worth it.

Male sex semen for steer calves

What I have read they have to throw away 90% of the semen after sexing because it is damaged from the sexing process. Then they don't have as much semen to sell. So on these better steer bulls that are selling out anyway, they should charge 10 times as much in order to keep the same income. With...

***ASK BRAD HOOK A QUESTION THREAD***

If you were building a picture pen from scratch, how big would you make it for calf pictures? Shape? Have another pen next to it for the cow?...

    Monopoly bw

In my experience, most of ours have been in the 80s. Just one heavier than that but out of a charolais cow that always throws heavy ones even to calving ease stuff. His birthweight and quality of calves makes him a favorite around here.

??? Don't know, never heard of it until you posted. Just did a search quick after your post. Would have to ask the lab you are sending it to. Defect testing, parentage, genestar...

What to use on Salute Daughters

Thanks everyone. I get to see enough clubbies but not as many shorthorns to have a good handle on what is working other than SULL prefixes.

What to use on Salute Daughters

I have several daughters of Salute in my herd. What has been working on them? I guess I would want to be on the clubbier/show side of things. Heifers would be great but a bull calf would more than likely become a steer around here. I am a little worried about birthweights since several of them...

    protocol for inducing

5cc lutalyse and 10cc Dex is all it takes here. If we give it in the morning 9-10 am, they have been calving from 24 hrs to 40 hours later. We also feed the cows about 5 pm to help reduce nighttime calving but inducing seems to mess that up. A couple of vets have told me that there is no reason...

    1st calf heifer not cleaning

Ditto on the leaving it alone. I hear Draxxin has worked good for helping with infections with it even though it is not labeled for it. I suppose any antibiotic would help. If they remove it manually you risk damaging the uterus. I would make sure your cows are getting enough selenium. Low...

    larges breeding barns

Has anyone used one of these barns for breeding cows? We are looking to breed some cows at rented pastures and one of these might be worth it. It might really help cows that get a little excited in the chute. http://www.largesbreedingbarns.com/

    Taking pelvic measurements

Is there any real trick to doing this? I have a rice pelvrimeter sp?. I asked the local vet and they don't do it but would palpate by hand and see what he thought. For what I know you measure height and width and multiply them together to get area. I live in Wisconsin and most vets in our area...

    Tiny Calf Born on Time

I had a calf born this morning that is about 30lbs. The cow is a black full flush cow that I had stuck a purebred charolais embryo in but later ultrasounded to our angus clean up bull for her next cycle. The calf is all white so it has to be the embryo we put in. We had other full sib embryos to...
