    Myostatin gene

We owned DFS Red Rider 839 flush mate to 844 which is in this calf's pedigree.  We used to wonder how anyone would consider these genetics low birth, calving ease?  We had multiple with abnormally large bw.  When i had a chat with Dr. Byers and Lincoln Job about there 878 calves they said the...

    Myostatin gene

Dale- i did not see test results on the calf you had concerns about. So, did you just speculate that myo might be the culprit.  I have quite a few cows with very similar breeding to the bottom side of that pedigree.  I really dislike having to pay more and test for more things but, as they say...

    Looking for suggestions

I would use night watch.  I have a neighbor that used county O and the smallest bw calf was 98# and the largest was 128#. These were angus/Hereford cross cattle. He was really surprised and said quite a few had structure issues as well.

18 vs 24 months old steers?

I have been contemplating doing the opposite.  I was going to look at my larger calves at weaning and push them to be 1200 by 12 months.  I have one now that has only been on 9 lbs of grain and free choice wheat hay since weaning and he is right at 1000 lbs.  So, i thought if i had known he...

Keeping replacement hfrs out of first calf hfrs?

Bill Jacobs once told me to pick a number say 550lbs at weaning for heifers keep all that are above and ship the rest.  Then 5 or so years down the line increase that number to 575 or 600 depending upon how well it is going.  After awhile all the poor producers will sort off.  A agree with...

Top 5 thickest shorthorn bulls available.

Another thick bull was greenridge courier. How much does it cost to produce a calf from conception to weaning. Then add the cost from weaning to harvest.  What does it cost to AI a cow, calving labor, weaning processing labor, feeding labor, harvesting labor and data collection.  What would...

Top 5 thickest shorthorn bulls available.

Mark I did have some calves by diamond cutter they were good. The second super sport was the one I was thinking of. Ss super sport by mb steetmaker. The issue I have had with the 119N cattle is poor teat shape.

Top 5 thickest shorthorn bulls available.

The RB Eagle line (eagle 148,255,239,etc..)has some muscle but are inconsistent in quality in my experience but may work for you. They did produce some good cattle. Alta cedar signature 119n or perfect storm would both add muscle. Waukaru used IWF MAGIC and made Copperfield both very thick...

    Bull Live Birth Weight

There are many things to consider for this.  First half of the genetic input comes from the COW and the other half from the bull.  The other thing that is often overlooked is that the genetic component only makes up half of the equation. The other half comes from the environment and how the cows...

    Shorthorn plus percentage requirements

I would contact the assn for clarification and actual percentage but, the calf should be considered 50% in the regestry.  My understanding with shows is that nationally sanctioned shows calf must beb50% or greater. Smaller county fairs and most jackpots, go by if you have a pare then you show. ...
