    Using dairy cows as Recips

If you have a feedlot to feed them then it could work, but in range conditions they dont hold up and some die off after calving.  At least that was our experience years ago.

    JDMC Big Sky

I have not used the bull but he does have an actual bw of 102.  Which, may not be conducive to crossing with some genetics for first calf heifers.  All of his progeny appear to be lower bw then himself.

Duncraggan did you have any free choice mineral out?  I have had similar issues with cows having small calves that only live for 1 to 5 days poat calving.  I only started experiencing this problem in the drought coupled with multimin injections 1 month pre calving.  Usually it is the first few...

Think PHA only comes from Clubby Shorts Famous Closed Herd 50 yr Pedigree

R.n.reed are you talking about weston suprise or the ar Cherokee bull when you say you can't find the pha?

Think PHA only comes from Clubby Shorts Famous Closed Herd 50 yr Pedigree

Medium rare is correct that on some older bulls the ASA assigned defect status to some bulls to test the system.  There are some that still have not been changed.  I believe this issue was remedied a couple of years ago so this case has me baffled.  Unlike DS (a non lethal condition) PHA is...

Stacking pedigrees to produce a Herd of Shorthorn specializing in show heifers?

AJ I think this could be an interesting discussion.  There are a few more variables tjat need to be defined to help understand constraints and goals.  1)effort/labor available for calving time 2) sires to be used on open market or unlimited budget to obtain hard to get semen 3)  national shows...

Some other bulls to consider would be crooked post stockman, muridale robert, diamond proficy, drc 101vm,  saskvalley imperative and if wanting some show look danny d.  I like mark's suggestions if those genetics suit your needs especially final four.  I believe yesterday has good calving ease...

    opinions on a bull calf

He appears to be growing well and has a good looking dam.  I would say he looks a little straight and tight ribbed.  That being said he could develop as time goes on.  He is square made and his feet all point in the right direction.  If you don't get huge price cuts at the market for selling...

    Herdsire

Do his calves have more lower quarter than his sire?  I think that bull will ne real useful an many herds.  Which sire line does he seem to be working on best?

    Calf not nursing back quarters

I agree if the cow is easy to get in them milk her rear out.  May want to consider saving the milk as it may have some colostrum in those quarters. Also see if your feed store sells teat dialators they make milking one out much easier.  I would watch the cow closely milk fever is not fun.

    Calving reports on Bearcat

Based on calves reported to the ASA (191) he has 4 calves at or over 100# and five that needed assistance.  Averages about 80# .  His sire was a definite calving ease bull.  Hope this helps

    Shorthorn bulls

I only have experience with JPJ not the other two sires mentioned.  The udders are really good and hold up well they are usually an improvement over there dams.  The teats a good the first two to three calves then get a bit coarse/ cone shaped.  I have not culled a JPJ daughter due to udder...

Need help with the new Shorthorn DNA test ??

No, there lack of explanation is disappointing as well as the the lack of offering other tests. Such as, polled/ (homo/hetero), myostantin, A1/A2 (milk type) etc.. i also wish the website was more user friendly.  If you have further questions give me a call or pm me.
