    Opinions on young show persons

4-H here starts at 8. My second son is in what we call Cloverbuds. They do everything the big guys do but they have activities geared more toward them during the project meetings. It's up to the parent to decide wether the child will show a calf and how big the calf will be. We have a special...

    Opinions on young show persons

I don't think they are trying to hold your child back by having these rules. It has a lot to do with safety in the show ring. My biggest fear about my kids in the show ring is that someone else's animal spooks his and he gets hurt because they aren't always able to take in ALL of their...

If he stamps his calves to look the way he does, you should be having a good time at the auction mart!  (thumbsup)

A new calving ease Shorthorn sire

He looks a lot like his sire, maybe a little longer head. Nice looking bull, I wonder if he will be a little thicker than his sire when he's mature?

A new calving ease Shorthorn sire

Actually, the royal family owns a herd of black angus cattle. Prince Charles is in charge of them. (son did a speech on angus in 4-H this year..)

What do you mean no commercial shorthorns?

oh and outspoken before you get your panties all in a knot, the cow is a commercial shorthorn that we bought as a heifer from a dairy/beef farmer. He uses the heavy milkers in his barn and the rest he uses in his beef herd. His herd consists of many colors and breeds. We bought it because it was...

What do you mean no commercial shorthorns?

::) yup that would be the one, the crappy calf that will weigh 850 lbs at weaning, yup that's the one I'm talking about but hey nobody wants calves like that because lbs does not equal dollars. And just for the record the calf had just stood up and was just beginning to stretch but whatever...

What do you mean no commercial shorthorns?

Have you ever looked at the Saskvalley program? They have a website...maybe they are more along the lines of what you are looking for... :) It took us a bit to find a shorthorn that was thicker muscled and easier keeping but they are out there. We calve in february and we have calves this year...

What do you mean no commercial shorthorns?

I agree that shorthorns have a place in the commercial industry. That is were we are, we have no purebred cattle. We breed with black angus and shorthorn. We find that the shorthorns are generally a lot quieter for handling. Our handling facilities are held up by baler twine and most of our...

What do you mean no commercial shorthorns?

So what you're saying is that you like Maine cattle and you add a bit of shorthorn because you like the color pattern?

What do you mean no commercial shorthorns?

shorthorns were smart not to let black in. It's easy enough to get black hided shorthorn cross calves.  if your association isn't doing what you want/need it to, than you need to get involved and work at it. But you're gonna have to be polite about it, or nobody will listen. No offense AJ and...

Three Thing to Ponder, Cows, The Constitution, The Ten Commandments

They also have a "no fail" policy in schools, so kids who should actually being doing a grade over again so they can better understand the subjects, get to go through their whole school life feeling like failures and struggling to pass the courses. Because that, according to the experts is...

An interesting Shorthorn bull in Ireland

He looks very long. Knowing his weight I would say he is too big for me, however on the picture I wouldn't have guessed him to be over 3400.  If he is 10 years old and still breeding cows I can't see a farmer keeping him around for that long if he was a hard calver.  I would like to see a...

    new 4-H steer

Here are pics taken recently. I added one from my nephew because he comes from our place as well and its interesting to hear what others think. The first one is the "Coal" (bleack angus cross) he is pictured on the first page as well. The second one is "Kane" a shorthorn cross, also pictured on...
