    Cooler Question

We have a 12X12 room we built for washing calves several years ago. The walls are all insulated and so is the ceiling and the walls are all covered with the kind of plastic sheeting that is used to line semi trailers. We are thinking about turning it into a cooler room by putting a large window...

    Weaning?

depends on the calf for us. We try to get tem up eating feed as soon as possible. We have found putting our potential show calves in the barn during the day and feeding them and keeping them in all day then turning them out of an evening to nurse all night works really well if you have the time...

Steer 3 months from final show - thinking about using stabilized rice bran

The feed company we get our feed from has a barley based show feed that they recommend the last few months before a show. They claim it really helps put on a nice finish and fill in some holes in a calf. We have not tried it yet because we showed a fall heifer last year but this year we have a...

    Wavy hair

I agree comb straight down then brush straight down the comb at a 45 degree angle then cb straight forward then blow dry. When they are completely dry we blow a mixture of sheen and Sullivan's hair linament in and comb in the desired direction. May sound like over kill but it works well on our...

    Deadliest Catch breeding

We had a great hereford heifer out of and About Time cow bred to Purple Milsap. This calve had it all, she had that clubby look to her. On the down side though she had a 115 lb birth weight so I wouldnt suggest using him on heifers. Anohter hereford marked bull you might consider is Carpe Diem .

    hair question

Would Sullivan's hair liniment mixed with my sheen work? I usually use that when I am finished with my daily hair work? I blow that in and then use a comb to help train the hair to lay the way I want .

Our steer has pretty good hair but it is more like fur than hair and is really difficult to clip. Seems to just kind of ball up on my clippers, first thought was blades were dull but put a new set of blades on and still the same thing. Any tips, tricks, or suggestions? thanks for the input

    Hoosier beef congress?

It was very congested saturday in the vendor area , but I liked that setup better than the way they used to do it. Made the barn a lot less congested and allowed for more people to be stalled in the main barn instead  of scattered over 3 or more barns. That being said if the weather had been bad...

    Cold weather gear

Under Armour or Nike compression base layers. Usually can find the Nike stuff on sale a lot cheaper than the UA stuff. For boots I like the MUCK brand boots, easy to move around in very warm and comfortable.

    neck sweats

Thanks for the opinions. I still have my old neck sweat from 20 years ago but got to looking on Sullivans website and Weavers and saw the new ones and just wondered if they were any better. Sounds like its time to oil up my old leather sweat and put it to work.

Some random thoughts for new cattle breeders

I showed cattle for about 12 years when I was younger, now my children are starting to show. It is the same now as it was 15 years ago, there are those that produce very nice cattle, do the work at home ,and go out and win by playing fair and there are those that don't. I'm trying to teach my...

    Sons Heifer

Appreciate the feedback. The rear pics dont really do her justice ,just cell phone pics and my son kind of has her legs up under her a bit in the first pics. We are really happy with her. Will make a really nice addition to my sons cow herd. I will post some more pics on here after this...

Beet Pulp vs Beet Pulp pellets

We have tried it all. Beet pulp shreds, depth charge, and a product called Full and Fresh. Personally we like Full and Fresh better than the Purina Depth Charge seems to put more guts in our show cattle. You can buy it at Rural King stores and it usually on sale for around $9 for a 40 pound bag...
