New to showing steers. Need some advice

A dose of Probiotics wouldn't hurt either.

New to showing steers. Need some advice

I agree...it sounds like a breeder/grower ration instead of a finishing ration. You could add extra corn to it to make it "hotter", but you still want it to be a balanced ration. You don't want to add too much extra corn all at once either. Do you have a Livestock Specialist at your local...

    Pour-On Dewormer's burning backs

We used the injectable type this year. We used it on the show calves for that very reason, and on the cows because it was kinda sprinkling that day.

    ordering semen online-question

Thanks for the info. About how long does shipping typically take? I guess just normal mail delivery? Is it better for the semen to get it delivered by a sales rep?

Looking for Fall 2014 Club Calf Sale in the MidWest

I'm thinking ahead to next show season. I'm wanting a "heads up" on Fall 2014 Club Calf Sales in my area, which is Northeast Missouri. So if you know of any sales that will be coming up in September, October, November, please let me know. I'm thinking of Mid-Missouri, Northern Missouri, Southern...

    ordering semen online-question

In previous years, some guy just delivered it to us. I think he might have been from Select Sires, but I can't really can't remember. Now I think that most semen places send out their semen in mailer tanks that then get sent back to them. Is that right?

    Holding a Steer

Here is some advice that was posted by someone else in the past. I've held onto it incase I ever needed to use it. So far, I haven't needed it. My cattle all quit eating when it gets hot in the summer. Feed him 3 scoops of Oat Grotes, 1/2 cup of Non-medicated Milk Replacer, 1 scoop of normal...

show heifer has hair and scalp irritation

We took 2 of our heifers to a fitting clinic a while back. One seems to have had an allergic reaction to one of the products that we used that day. I'm not sure, but I suspect that it was the Zoom Bloom, simply because it has some harsh chemicals in it. Has anyone out there had a calf that had a...

    Just for fun

I thought that I would share this...just for fun. I started feeding Epic to the steers and heifers several weeks ago. I haven't noticed any real change in the cattle yet ( I didn't expect to yet either). But I have noticed the cats started picking through the feed pans as I make them up. At...

any RED Maine bulls to buy semen on?

Sorry...internet is down at home and my phone has been misplaced. Knabe- You are right about show heifers and replacements not necessarily having the same phenotype. I would choose a replacement over a show heifer every time. Regarding Shorthorns...I kind of thought that the original Maine...

    Heifer scared of small people

Don't give up before you give it an honest shot. As I said, other small things being around may help (dogs, cats). It is not uncommon for them to be afraid of things that they have never been exposed to. We leave a radio on in the barn at all times to get them used to noise and hang feed sacks...

    Hereford bull for heifers

We don't actually have any Hereford on the farm. My husband favors black. He has 100+ commercial cows. Anything with color is discounted heavily at the sale barn. I have about 20 show stock cows and heifers with Maine, Chi, and Angus cross. I am working on improving the cow herd...breeding into...

    calving ease EPD number question

I don't typically put a lot of stock in EPDs, but I know there are folks out there with way more AI experience than us, and more experience using some of these bulls. I do appreciate all of the comments! Just an interesting thought...an older cattleman that I respect a lot told me years ago...
