    Hereford bull for heifers

I called one of the semen distributors...I don't remember which one...to ask what they are selling his semen for. They said $250. Someone else might have it for less.

    calving ease EPD number question

Thanks for the helpful comments. I do realize that it doesn't depend solely on the bull...we just pulled more calves from heifers this year than we should have. Every single one was a huge bull calf. We lost the biggest one.

    Heifer scared of small people

It is very common for cattle getting used to things being one way. At our place, it is me and my kids doing most everything with the show calves. My husband usually only gets involved at show time. So, a couple of times we've had heifer that didn't like men just because she wasn't used to being...

    Heifer scared of small people

Dogs and cats roaming around the barn and lot will help. Tie the heifer up and just have some kids be near her...playing close by but not close enough that they can get hurt. Let the heifer watch them. Expose her to different people and different situations. My friend has chickens roaming in and...

    Hereford bull for heifers

I was really wanting to AI a black crossbred heifer to CRR About Time 743, but I am not willing to pay $250 a unit for semen. What do you suggest I use instead? I'm looking for something that is safe for heifers and free of genetic disease.

    calving ease EPD number question

My husband has 100+ cows in his commercial cow/calf operation. I have only around 20 show stock cows. For either business, my main goal for heifers is a live calf. If it happens to be show quality on top of that, or does a great job at yield and grade after it is butchered, that is a bonus! But...

Black baldy bull to use on heifers

Someone else recently asked about the best baldy bull. I don't have to have the best, but I am looking for a nice black baldy bull to use on black Maine, Chi, or Angus cross heifers. Looking for a bull that is NOT a genetic disease carrier that can give me some replacement females.

we had a young herd bull semen tested

We've had a group of heifers in with 2 young herd bulls. The heifers are now calving and just by the looks of the calves, they are almost all out of one bull (home raised). The better bull (purchased) seems to have only bred a few of them, so we had him semen tested. The first time, not much of...

    calving ease EPD number question

Sorry that this is such a dumb question to those of you who know, but...as far as calving ease EPDs go...the higher the number, the better...right? So how high of a number should I look for and is this the same across all breeds...Maine, Chi, Angus, Charolais, Shorthorn, etc? Thank you!

    Why show steers

I don't like to pay too much for a heifer and definitely not a steer. We show our own calves when we can. But I will gladly pay $2 or $3 thousand for a family activity that *all 5 of us can do together *that teaches my kids the value of hard work, responsibility, and honesty *that teaches my...

    Why show steers

It seems to me that what you are asking is simply, "Why show club calves?" The answer to both questions is the same: *family fun *learn character, responsibility, hard work, etc *meet people, learn more about the beef industry and agriculture, travel a bit, etc Some folks make money on it...

Tips to get a heifer to claim her calf

One of our heifers had a huge bull calf. Unfortunately, the calf was dead when we pulled it. My husband tried to get the heifer to claim any unwanted twin from another cow. He got tired of tying the heifer's head and hind leg up, so he put a set of hobbles on the heifer's hind legs.
