Thanks for the helpful comments. I do realize that it doesn't depend solely on the bull...we just pulled more calves from heifers this year than we should have. Every single one was a huge bull calf. We lost the biggest one.

I was really wanting to AI a black crossbred heifer to CRR About Time 743, but I am not willing to pay $250 a unit for semen. What do you suggest I use instead? I'm looking for something that is safe for heifers and free of genetic disease.

It seems to me that what you are asking is simply, "Why show club calves?" The answer to both questions is the same: *family fun *learn character, responsibility, hard work, etc *meet people, learn more about the beef industry and agriculture, travel a bit, etc Some folks make money on it...

One of our heifers had a huge bull calf. Unfortunately, the calf was dead when we pulled it. My husband tried to get the heifer to claim any unwanted twin from another cow. He got tired of tying the heifer's head and hind leg up, so he put a set of hobbles on the heifer's hind legs.
