    When is it considered overkill?

This is MY opinion, and also the way that we handle these situations. Don't take a Major Show Heifer to your County Fair.  There is absolutely NOTHING good that can come of that.  I don't care if she is the only one you have...don't take her. Because she is the only one you have does not...

    When is it considered overkill?

To say you can't beat a $15,000 steer with a $3000 steer is a lack of insight.  Also don't forget some of the greatest lessons are not how to act but how not to act.

    When is it considered overkill?

It's considered overkill when you decide to stop bidding.  it's none of our business to tell them how to spend their money.  Get a budget that you're comfortable with and work with that let the others do what they want to do.

Fort Worth Stock Show breed determination[do they still classify?]

The classifiers know the cattle aren't purebreds and could care less what they are.  They are tasked with allowing in cattle that fit a predetermined pattern more like a dog show. You fit your in you don't fit your out. That's it.

    Denver '15 bulls

I thought Man of the year was the best bull for raising cattle I like. He was stout, flexible, up headed, and flat shouldered. I liked some other bulls but won't use any till they prove themselves. Man of the year is the only one I would consider using year one.

Your defining virtue by breeding cattle that fit your definition of acceptable.  Feeding your children is a virtuous desire as well as self preservation.

If I can make more money on fewer calves taking into account the higher breeding and lower breeding % what does it matter.  It's all about the bottom line. You raise the cattle you want to and can sell. I'll do the same. I won't tell you how to run your cows don't tell me how to run mine.

    Photo Manipulation

DSC nailed it.  I have tried to go snap quick pictures with my phone of good cattle that aren't all dressed up and people pass 100% of the time.  A picture that isn't all dolled up is worse than no picture in my experience 100% of the time.  I have gotten to where if I don't have time to do it...
