we feed whole oats out of the field (we grow them) and top dress with a little milk replacer and soybean meal.  The milk replacer tastes good and helps get them on the feed and we back off on it once all calves are eating well

If you don't feel confident in you ability to mix a feed yourself, it is a very good (albeit expensive) choice.  I have found that I can mix a feed myself that is just as good (better really) for less than 1/3 of the price
