Rate of gain question for market steers

What type of stter is he and do you know his age?  I ask because these are major factors for his ability to grow.  Also, do you have anywhere you could plant some oats for winter grazing?  If so, he would grow like a weed if he has the genetic potential to do so at all.  Will he be shown at all...

End of a Legacy-MSU Hereford Dispersal

My livestock judging coach here at UF just came from MSU and he hates it.  It really is a sad day when an administrative staff completely loses sight of what it is to be an ag school

THIS IS WHAT DROUGHT LOOKS LIKE ( not really cattle related)

I can tell you that I live in an area that has been declared drought 2 years in a row.  They have been 2 of the best grass years ever due to perfect timing of rain.  Peanut yields are expected to bust the records wide open, but corn was terrible this year for us.  Different crops need different...

    Thoughts of My Steer??

I wish I had a herf steer that looked like that!  Good luck and I think he should do amazingly well for a purebred steer of any breed for you

Alphatoxin and the midwest corn crop

Alphatoxin is also really bad on chickens but if the overall supply is in decent shape then most buying points will buy a few loads that test high and just mix them in with the general supply.  We sell to a feed mill that grinds for Purdue and have never had a problem with bad loads as they get...

Our cow pens are under water and facing more rain from Issac!!

Daimond G I went through High Springs a few weeks ago and it was still wet from our last big system.  We aren't as wet as you but we can't handle the +- 10 inches that they're forecasting for us either

The best Breed for a young showman

I'll throw Charolais out as a wild card.  Every calf I ever showed was either a purebred breeding animal or crossed with a black breed for a show steer.  All 23 calves that I showed were dog gentle, (also including a Maine/Herf steer I just sold) and my entire cowherd now follows me around like...

Week until fair - steer pics

I completely missed 2 words and therefore my post was irrelevant  (clapping) Nice calf with no serious flaws.  Good luck with him

Creep Feed Recipe that you use

we feed whole oats out of the field (we grow them) and top dress with a little milk replacer and soybean meal.  The milk replacer tastes good and helps get them on the feed and we back off on it once all calves are eating well

    Honors show chow

If you don't feel confident in you ability to mix a feed yourself, it is a very good (albeit expensive) choice.  I have found that I can mix a feed myself that is just as good (better really) for less than 1/3 of the price

    The well has run dry

Got home tonight to thirsty cattle and no water in the house.  Got the neighbor who digs wells over and he says we need to add another 100 feet of pipe or so.  We had an irrigation well that we knew was getting touchy but this was a little more startling to discover. We are in one of the less...

    Obstacle course

I would only time the obstacles and not the in between moves, just a thought to keep people from running all over the barn

    Cattle photography prices

Hey y'all.  I've been asked to do a few pictures for a friend and I have no idea how much to charge.  How much have y'all charged or payed for on-site pics?  I will not be doing the fitting, just taking the pictures and photoshoppping the halters off etc.  Feel free to message me if you don't...

    Favorite Clippers for Shaving

Clipping charolais cattle they do get a little pink but we always clip a week before the show anyways to soften up and clipper tracks and they just look a little nicer with that touch of natural growth.  You can always cover the eyes and use a little white touch up, done that too.  Hold it about...

    Optimum Day

It really depends on the calf and how good you want them to be.  I have caught and halter broke calves 3 weeks before the county fair, and I have fed and worked hair for 4 months before they leave the farm.  It also depends on their weight and your target weight for the fair, how well mama is...

    Shavings in trailer?

we always put down 8 inches of coarse sawdust when we hauled more than 4 hours total, could have been overkill but we never had on get stove up from riding
