Funniest or Embarrassing Moments? Post them here!

The first calf I ever clipped by myself...enough said. Also the steer that got spooked as we were exiting the trailer that landed about 15 feet from the back of the trailer with me landing face first right behind him, but I didn't let go of the rope!!

    Tires

We've never really bought discount tires, always went to our big tire dealer that handles and fixes all of our tractor, irrigation, trailer, and truck tires.  We have always tried to get them on sale but never bought online or anything.  Looked up and I wrote almost 10 grand to them last year...

    Tires

I will never buy a cooper tire again.  A cousin of mine had one blow out on the interstate with him and 19 surgeries later he can walk again with a cane at 25 years old.  Not a month later I had one blow on the dirt road that only had about 7,000 miles on it.  they were different tires...

    Hay Producers

We're 13 inches down for the year here already, following a year we were almost 30 inches short for.  Corn is already tousled and filling out, peanuts are in the ground early, cotton is up and growing, oats and wheat are cut, and veggies are already coming in in southwest Georgia.  We are behind...

Is this what an "Honorable" breeder does?

Price of the calf regardless, if it dies on my watch I will replace it with one of equal quality, even if I have to go buy it from someone else.  THAT'S what an honorable breeder does.

    popping paserns

It also could be an unexpected growth spurt.  We sold a bull a few years back that was very competitive in the ring, right up until Jr. nationals as a 2 year old when he promptly grew about 3 inches of frame in the month before and fell apart, both structurally and balance-wise for about 4...

Racks for hauling cattle chute on side of stock trailer

ratchet straps work wonderfully and don't require welding or permanent changes to anything, we've done it that way over about 20,000 miles of road since my oldest sister started showing years ago.

    Front end problem

Banamine might help depending on what the problem is.  If the vet didn't see an issue then it sounds like either just a sore foot or ankle, probably from stepping in a hole or on a rock.  Those injuries don't have to be obvious to be painful to a calf.

Should sale catalogs still be mailed out?

I'm young and tech savvy but there's nothing I like better than thumbing through a full color catalog.  I can see cutting your mailing list down but there needs to be a hard copy at least sent to your customers from the past few years and people who have expressed interest in your cattle.  I...

Fan mounted mister or overhead mister?

we tried a pre made system (from k-mart I think) a few years ago and it just put out more water than we wanted, so we bought a sullivan's ring and never had a problem with the barn getting too wet with a fan/mister and another fan on each stall I will add that we moved the kmart mister to the...

    Favorite type of Cow

among both my Char cows and crossbreeds of many compositions I have never noticed length correlating with doability, though I will say my favorite cows are always the long ones and we cull hard doers on the second calf, giving them the benefit of the doubt with their first.  I'll thumb back...

    Semen Tank Question

then you should be fine, when I took my AI class the rep had a temperature chart and even half way up the neck I believe it was about -120 degrees, but don't quote me on that one lol.

    Semen Tank Question

it should have been plenty cold for them, I was always told that below the neck it's still cold enough that there's no danger, and if it was full then your semen should have been almost completely submerged in N2 anyways

    Favorite type of Cow

I personally believe that it does, as it increases capacity, and as you said would indicate a longer loin.  steaks come from the loin, therefore a long cow with a long loin would be more valuable, no?  And it's just a personal preference issue, I would rather have a cow that's as proportionally...

Disposable Syringe or Repeat Syringe Gun

We've always used disposables for every type of drug administration.  We make the syringes in the house before we go out to work cows then throw em in the cooler with an ice pack if it's refrigerated stuff.  We find that this increases dose accuracy and you're not risking any disease...

    Favorite type of Cow

When I read long spined I interpreted it as being long patterned, or longer bodied than averages.  It's a desirable trait that you purposely misinterpreted.  No need to be rude about it

    The Ultimate Feed Lot Steer

A Charolais crossed with any 2 breed british cow.  Genetics say that third cross is your best and experience tells us all that a Charolais over british always makes an amazing terminal calf.  I would bet that a Galloway/shorty bred to a Charolais bull would be the most efficient animal that ever...

    Photo Editing ???

I just got a new Mac and was wanting to get into some photo editing for a little bit of a hobby/spending money maybe.  Is there a program that anyone really loves besides the obvious Aperture or Photoshop?

    Child Labor Rules withdrawn

Agriculture won one, it happens so rarely I find it hard to believe.  I think the president's campaign advisers thought about the 1% of people who would absolutely hate him for ruining the most basic aspect of our lives and they said to make it go away
