    bad eggs

The minute I heard the egg recall on the news I called it bogus...I personally think its the egg producers trying to get prices to go up or something.  Media drives the market in every field, they are quick to do these recalls and all but they fail to educate people...You would be hard pressed...

Spring Heifer calf Judging Class 2010: Volume 2

I like them 4-2-3-1...the white heifer may give up some muscle expression to the pair that follows her, but she is the longest, cleanest fronted heifer of the class and in my opinion is the broodiest of the class, when I got to her pictured I couldnt help thinking this is what a female is...

Judging a County Fair Heifer Show off BREED...fair, or not????

Has anyone ever heard a judge say he used a steer because it is the one that WILL grade choice...I havent and I have never said it, what we say is "this steer is more likely to grade choice" we say that because we cant tell you that for sure until we take the hide off or one, or unless maybe we...

Judging a County Fair Heifer Show off BREED...fair, or not????

How exactly does one judge by laying on hands?? I have been in this business quite a while and the only real thing you can tell by "laying on hands" is how mch hair the animal has and how finished the animal is.by touch you can tell how much fat cover the animal is carrying, but that doesnt...

Judging a County Fair Heifer Show off BREED...fair, or not????

Remember that show day appraisal is pretty much just visual and as judges we cant ever be sure what is actually under the hide until it comes off....u have to remember that grading is based mostly off of marbling...and the best fat guess we get is cover, which doesnt always equal marbling....if...

    Road Warrior and public posts

RW, dont let it get to ya man...I enjoy your posts...I responded to one a few weeks ago, not long after joining steer planet...I threw out some random numbers as an example of the way I bill clients/partners, and a few felt a need to rip the post apart because the numbers I used were not...

    Commercial Cattle

The way I read it is this county has no true commercial heifer class...their breeding heifers have to be papered and Div. 4 would be for those heifers in breeds that allow you to register percentage cattle...i.e. the percentage Chi's that are registered, Maintainers, Shorthorn Plus, etc...a lot...

    Black hided myth assc.

I think the last part of this is a little misleading...I am a graduate student working for a University doing research in finish and marble...on an average black cattle dont finish or marble better than any other colored cattle out there...Herefords for example finish and marble as easily and as...

    Fitting

I agree...make him look natural...and do as much as possible to hide faults and hilight good..but dont overdo it...there is nothing I hate more then seeing a steer walk in the ring and thinking WOW...then putting my hands on him and realizing he is all hair and glue with nothing underneath!

    Hfr pic

Very complete heifer...and since you say she is standing on a slope I am going to say she is ok...but, while I agree that many are getting to straight, if this heifer was on level ground standing normally and looked like that I would say her hind legs needed some improvement

    Opinions of this Steer Please!!

I agree with everyone else pretty much everyone else...I dont think his front end is terrible...but he is just so powerful in the front and doesnt seem like he carries that throughout, and could be a touch deeper in the flank...what we mean as judges by them being "to soft" or "carrying to much...

How do you like the Charolais heifer?

I think she is a very nice Char. heifer...she combines muscle w/femininity about as well as any Charolais out there!

    cell phones in the ring

Well my cell phone is almost always in my pocket...though I am a bit old for showmanship..as a judge  to me its not a completely bad thing to have your cell phone in your pocket...as long as I dont notice it ringing in the middle of the class...but I agree if your showing haired cattle you...

    Cattle Investor Question

I was not sitting and looking at records when doing this....I was just giving a simple round number for example....If your truly interested in my exact costs and what I am billing then I will get that informatioon...but I didnt think it was vital to the topic...just throwing some numbers in for...

Iowa County Fairs low in numbers

The way Louisiana does it for their State Show is the animals have to qualify at a District show...while the judge places every class he also assigns each animal a color, either purple, blue, or red.  Purple ussually points out the higher end of the animals and qualifies them for state, blue is...

    Cattle Investor Question

Speaking as someone who is just getting my brother out of 2 very bad partnerships he got into with friends I will agree that you will not be friends in the end UNLESS you follow some steps. 1)Make sure they understand that this is a partnership not a friendship. 2)Regardless of how much you...

    Breeding Standards

My opinion is that an structurally incorrect cow/heifer should never enter a breeding herd, for me that is an automatice elimination. Thats where her performance comes in, the female has to be structurally sound and have some volume in order to be able to raise a calf at all, especially if we...

    Hats and Showing

As someone who has seen it from all angles, as a showman, fitter, producer, and judge, I think you have to look at your surroundings...growing up in Louisiana where a lot of Brahman's and Brahman influenced cattle are shown, you often see showmen in those breeds with hats on, however in the...
