Was wondering if you guys do all your recip cows and AI candidates together or at different times. The past 2 years we have synched everyone at the same time so we had 20 head due the same day! Which was Ok but if we hit bad weather or something (mid-Feb), it could be a potential disaster. It...
Hey Everyone,
Thanks for all your replies. I am happy to report that the heifer is up and standing on her own. She was down for 2 weeks and we started using the hip lift and now she can stand alone and is now able to get herself up on her own (until we got some mud finally)! She has one back leg...
Do you all feel that by starting the creep early you eliminate the founder issue? We haven't creeped in years but used to start 45 days before weaning and could lose a calf to founder or a cow if they busted in.
If I were the breeder and you wanted to return the calf for disposition reasons, I would either take it for a while and assess or either give refund or credit towards something else.
We had a heifer that broke easily but then went through a "uneasy" period. We figured out 2 things about her...
We have gotten a hip lift and hope that helps with her progress. Usually they get up after a day or two, this one is still trying and we hope she comes around. Thanks to everyone for the advice.
Thanks for the responses. I was thinking of giving dex and banamine but wanted to see if that was the right thing. We don't have a hip lifter but are checking with our vet, he has one he loans out.
My vet does some homemade potion he calls "calf claimer", I believe it is a mixture of rompum and ace. Give to the cow and let her out and then after it has taken effect send the hungry calf to her.
The skinning has worked well for us. Just this year we were pulling a dead calf and gathered...
I tried searching for this topic but it brought back over 50 pages with those words so I thought I would just post instead.
Heres the scenario. My Dad had a Charolais heifer try to calve during night, missed seeing her. Next morning, calf was out to hips and dead, got him out fine but she is...
Uluru, you have a great point, have any universities studied this? I am sure we can't be the first to think of it....lol. We have noticed even a move of 200 miles can make a difference. We used to run cattle in NW KS and live in NE KS. We only had 10 acres of fescue in NE KS but would bring our...
We occasionally buy cattle from other regions of the country and many times it is a significant environment change. With bred cows, it seems we have a hard time getting them bred back after calving, at least for a year until they adjust to the climate. We wondered if it would be best to buy open...
Just found out the news, we are so saddened to hear. Red was such a nice and respectful person. We could all learn and thing or two from her. Never met her but felt her presence strong on steerplanet. We will all miss you RED!
I have caught several people in a lie about calf's ages. We were all questioning a bull calf at FW this January that was supposedly an Aug bull, we were all scratching our heads on that one. Then , as I am walking by, I hear the son talking to an interested party, says come look at this bull...
We don't cut anything until weaning at the earliest. That is just the way we do it. But, those that we determine are too big at birth are in the 1st round to be cut. Along with those with poor dispositions, we don't tolerate the poor dispositions either. It has hurt me several times to band the...
I am actually looking for some outcross genetics for my dads Charolais herd. He has used Sonderup genetics for years and has not brought an outside female into the herd for 25+ years. Need to boost milk and structure, we already have what I called thick and stout, cows are about 1300-1600 avg...
