A couple of our herd bulls

Now that is weird!  I have no idea where the name HC Slick Trail 4275YY came from?  As far as I can tell everything else on his pedigree on the ASA registry is correct. The only thing wrong that I can see right now is his sire's name. It should be HC Timeline 17T. Free Spirit is THF, PHAF and...

A couple of our herd bulls

I snapped a couple pics of a couple of our herd bulls while checking pastures this morning. The first picture is HC Free Spirit 6Y. He is now 5 years old and is our senior herd sire. He has sired our best sire group again this year. We had two assisted births in 2016, with both being...

    Shorthorn dispersal

We used a lot of Abricot back in the 80s when we had our Simmental herd. Loved his daughters and his bulls were not quite masculine enough but grew like weeds. Abricot himself, was considered a killer in the studs he was in. I saw him collected once and it was quite a show. He had two heavy nose...

    Shorthorn dispersal

I just don't get why anyone is concerned about what is or isn't in a dispersal sale. In this case, Cyclone Trace did what they wanted to do, and they were very successful at what they did. They were great for this business, and they will be missed. Their support of young breeders was amazing...

    Shorthorn dispersal

Oh I have to disagree with this statement big time!  The commercial cattle business is without any doubt a people business as well as a dollars and cents business. I have seen many commercial producers drive past many breeders farms, who have good breeding stock ( often several hundreds of...

Info on some more old shorthorn bulls

I have semen from Goltho Signal 3rd in my tanks. He was a Lincoln Red bull  and at the time that he was imported into Canada, he was considered to be the best Lincoln Red bull that had been produced in England to that time. He was a big bull with lots of volume and he bred pretty well. Some of...

65% of the Shorthorn breeds current design is based on show heifers.

I think there have been cheaters since time began. I have no idea when the first cattle show was held, but I expect there was people trying to cheat to win back then. I remember hearing my grandfather tell stories of breeders back in the 20s and 30s who would slap the animal so much with rubber...

65% of the Shorthorn breeds current design is based on show heifers.

I do not think being called a Master Fitter has to include a bunch of unethical practices to try to win at any cost. In fact, my definition of a master fitter would only include those who do their best and never have to have anyone question their ethics.

65% of the Shorthorn breeds current design is based on show heifers.

In that era ( or any other era for that matter) if you are involved in showing cattle, why would you not want to be the best you can be? Why would you not want to present your cattle to the best of your ability?  Why would you even bother, unless you tried your very best?  If you aren't going...

65% of the Shorthorn breeds current design is based on show heifers.

I was at Louada just a couple weeks before Bonaparte was leaving for Argentina. He had sold at $30,000 in their sale to Charles Duggan, a leading breeder in Argentina. This was approximately $227,000 in 2016 dollars when you convert it using an inflation calculator. I have a vivid mental image...

Ds-what percentages when breeding 2 carriers?

I got a big surprise last summer when I DS tested the rest of my donor cows that had not been done yet. One of the oldest cows, who has a non appendix pedigree, came back as being a DS carrier. She had been in our herd for many years and I had never had an issue with any of her progeny and she...

65% of the Shorthorn breeds current design is based on show heifers.

When I used to sit in the buyer row at the auction marts buying cattle , you would see an occasional Shorthorn or Shorthorn cross feeder calf come through the markets. Today, there are many many more but in reality, Shorthorn influence cattle are still a minority of those selling. Here where I...

65% of the Shorthorn breeds current design is based on show heifers.

To other commenters, I've read the initial thread multiple times, and can't find any hint that AJ was using the stats to complain or put down the breed. He's simply asking if we think the stats he heard sound fair. He's doing his research to try and find out the validity of something someone...

65% of the Shorthorn breeds current design is based on show heifers.

I really could not care less if this was true. We all raise Shorthorns ( or cattle of any breed) for a definite reason and if you want to produce show cattle, all I have to say is more power to you. I have come to the conclusion that people who dwell on this stuff are only using it for a crutch...

    Blenview Chaser 204C.....

The biggest problem I had with Waco himself was that he had very small feet for his size. I used Waco in some flushes and have had a few Waco offspring and have yet to see one of his progeny with the same issues as he had. My Waco calves have all had great feet. Maybe I got lucky, but his feet...

    who's your daddy sale results?

I thought this year's sale had some interesting bulls. I got the lot 12 bull ( Saskvalley Blue Jeans 136B) and he is already out with some early calving cows. He looks good and now if we can only get some moisture, he and his girls might actually have something to eat this summer! Congrats to...

    11 out of 13

A very good looking bull!  The breed and the beef industry needs more like this guy.  Congrats on producing him! I remember when I was very young, I listened to a well known breeder at the time talking to my dad, and he said a successful breeder should never be afraid to use genetics he has...

    Byland Mission's daughters udders?

I have had a couple Mission daughters and they had great udders. The Mission daughters at Cagwin's are a delight to see. Not a bad udder in the bunch.

    Albo

I am only going my memory, and that can be scary... but I am going to say he would be considered on the high end of what is considered moderate today. I don't remember him as being big framed. His sire, Columbus was actually very moderate framed and I think Albo was closer to what Columbus was...
