I would have to say if your taking him to a county fair where not having a lot of hair on your calves is pretty common, I wouldn't worry about trying to keep it. As far as getting the crap balls off of him, rinse him and let the water soak in and then use a curry comb to get out what you can...

I have been very happy with Ace of Diamonds and have had pretty good success with Sonny Deuce as well.

I agree that chances are that it is a wart and to squeeze it  than pull it off is the correct thing to do. But, if you have recently put a tag in the steer and it is swelled up it could be an infection and you should call the vet.

If this is just something somebody made up that's pretty sh**ty of them. But also at the same time relieving.

Well the problem is that your steer has lice not fleas. You need to go to a TSC or a vet/vet supply and buy some Ivomec or Iveron, something along that lines that says it kills lice and other parasites in bovine. If the person that sold you the steer says its hard on his hair than make him/her...
