    Late/Non Responders to CIDRs

Here is my scenario.  We used the 5-day protocol for CIDRs with two 5 ml. injections of Lute when we pulled the CIDR, one chute trip, on 6 cows.  Pulled CIDRs and Luted on May 6.  Within 84 hours 4 of the six had cycled and bred.  The two remaining, one a first calf heifer, one a 4 year old, did...

    Standing Heat patches

What has been your experience with using the new Standing Heat patches?  We put three on a week ago and two of them were off within 3 days.  I see they have to be warmed to 100 degrees when applied and pressed on firmly and maybe we need to be more diligent in that part.  We've always used...

    Concrete Lot Slope

I need to replace the concrete where we winter feed our cows and would like to know what degree slope can I get by with without being being too steep for the cattle to slip.  I'm replacing it because it is almost flat and holds water instead of it draining.  Also wanting to construct a manure...

    Searching Old Topics

I don't know if I'm getting dumber or this new site needs tuned up, but I can't find how to search a topic that hasn't had a recent post. What I'm trying to find is the discussion about 5 day synching and using two shots of PG 8 hours apart or at one time.  I picked up synching drugs today and...

    Bull Info

I have acquired a tank with some semen from bulls I've heard of and others I have not.  Do any of you know anything about them or where I might go to get info like pedigree, etc. The Pit Boss - I think Tony Austin in Texas had a smokey bull by this name. Whisky For My Men DHF Inferno...

    Tail bleeding for preg checking

That would explain the reason or requirement the cow has to be at least 90 days post-partim and 30 days bred before the blood can be pulled to give an accurate result.  If what you say is true (90 - 120 days), that still leaves another 30 days for the protein b to be present.  Does anyone have...

    Clover Hay??

We're feeding hay with a good amount of clover in it we bought early last summer.  The cow's manure is very loose and some of the calves have loose stool, not scours, just loose like diarrhea.  We've run out of straight grass or we would be mixing it.  It's not pure clover, maybe half with the...

    Delicing Calves

I'm noticing the babies doing a lot of rubbing and scratching.  I suspect with them and the cows in tight quarters they are getting lice from the mommas.  Could we delice the month to two week old babies?  Can Ivermectin or Cydectin be poured on this young?

    AI calving dates [variation]

We got 9 out of 11 AI'ed last May with only 1 or 2 repeats.  The 2 that didn't settle, one was cycling in Sept. so we turned the bull back with her, and the other is due April 1 to the bull.  We AI for a friend that has 8 cows and as far as we know only got 2 AI.  But it's hard to figure out...

    retain placenta

The current procedure is to give lute and antibiotics but vets are now saying don't pull it out like it use to be done.  Check with your vet on what you can use besides Lute, but that should work.

    Just broke our bull streak!

We just can't be satisfied with a healthy calf, can we! LOL  We started with a bull and have alternated with six on the ground - bull, herifer, bull, heifer, etc.  I hope the next oner breaks that chain.  We've got our good Kadabra bred to Monopoly due today and I hope it's another high dollar...

    New Bulls

I agree with an Angus calving the first time around.  We have also had good luck with Smokin'Joe, an Ali son.  One thing about him is he has a small head to help get the birthing started off right.

    Lactating Cows with Diarrhea

We have a few cows with diarrhea after calving and some frothing of the mouth.  The hay we are feeding does have some clover in it but not enough, IMO, to cause a problem.  Unfortuneately, this is the last hay I have, so I don't have any thing else to mix or feed.  As long as we watch for bloat...

    Third Trimester ASbortion

Give me your ideas and experiences with why a cow aborts in her third trimester.  We had a cow checked preg (blood test) Nov. 1.  On Jan. 7 the bull was following her and tried to breed her.  Today, 44 days after the bull was interested, she is in estrous.  We probably didn't catch the cycle on...

    Selling calves

Look at it the same way realtors  do when trying to sell a client a house.  They're going to show probably 10 properties or more before the buyer buys.  A buyer will also buy from another realtor after you spent countless time talking to them, looking for the properrties that fit their needs...

    First of the year.

Did they get both of them?  You mentioned getting there as the second calf hit the ground so I thought maybe you saved it.

    Inforce 3

For those of using Inforce 3 as part of your newborn health protocol.  How do you manage it since it is a vaccine that has to be rehydrated and used right away?  Do you wait until you have enough calves to use the whole vial?  Maybe some of you have 10 or more born within a day or two of each...

How important is a web site?

Exactly, bad pictures are worse than none.  Updating is usually only a twice a year thing, for me anyway.  For Club Calves you can update in the Spring with info and pictures of new calves and then in the Fall when you're selling them.  You could throw in one or two more with show ring...
