    Shorthorn breeding suggestion

A lot of mixed reports on Capiche, you might try saskvalley yesterday he has a CE of 5.6 and a BW -1.4 so should be ok for heifers. we got three we are going to breed to him in the coming weeks.

    safe calving pen size

eight  by eight is too small the last thing you want is for the cow to lay down with her rear end pointed in the corner and be pushing a calf out into the wall. Besides eight by eight doesn't leave enough room to operate a calf jack should a problem arise. We try to stick to 10x12 minimum.

    White hooves on shorthorns?

I would imagine that white hooves=weak hooves is an old wives tale, just as it is in horses.  Many horse people do still believe in it, even though it's been well documented to be false.  http://www.horsechannel.com/horse-health/horse-hoof-myth-26038.aspx

A little more info might help. Is this your primary source of income or do you work off the farm as well? Show cattle or commercial cows.

On Farm Test Results - Wrap Vs Twin

I see the point about wrapping the hay twice , but the part that still baffles me is all the money spent to seed out,  fertilize, cut, rake, and bail the crop why would you allow any spoilage?? A bail tarp in like three hundred dollars and can be used for four to five years and each one can...

Little Cedar Cabrera Res. National Champion Shorthorn Bull

As another small breeder, just getting into the breed, I completely agree with this.  Sure, I would try 10 straws, but 50?  No way.  Especially on an unproven bull!  I think that by only offering a sale of a minimum of 50 straws, you are excluding a large part of your market. JMO.

    How long to wait?

Waiting on a cow/heifer to calve is the hardest thing to do, with a cow we will usually wait an hour or so but a heifer we try to give them a couple hours. If there is little to no progression in this time I pull them I will take a pulled live calf every day over a dead calf that the cow/heifer...

    HAIRY WARTS??

So I have looked up some of the older post on here about hairy warts, we have a cow with a sore ankle, she walks fine and stands on it fine but when something touches her dewclaws she immediately lifts her foot and shakes it out behind her, we had the hoof trimmer out yesterday and found that...

    wintering calves on corn silage

Ok, so maybe not a good idea to feed to the heifers, but will it blow up the front end of a bull calf?  We have one that we would like to campaign next year as a yearling, and would love to be able to put him on the silage, if possible!

    wintering calves on corn silage

Asking specifically about show cattle (shorthorns & angus).

    wintering calves on corn silage

We also have quite a bit of high moisture hay mostly red clover and alfalfa would it be better then the corn silage  to keep the gains up? or should we just stick to dry hay and a grain ration?

    wintering calves on corn silage

We just finished cutting the corn, so my question is feeding calves. Having never fed corn silage before we are wondering if you should keep the show animals on their daily grain ration as well or to cut back, we don't want to blow any apart come spring. They will be getting around 500- 600 lbs...

    Go Bob Bale Feeders

We looked around for some different styles of feeders as well, however in talking with some other farmers with the open style bottoms the general comment was that the young cattle were getting legs stuck and end up breaking them when trying to reach the hay in the middle of the feeder.  we...
