Dry here in SW Ontario too...  really need more rain. April was half of normal precip, and with early warm spell in March plants got going early and then froze off with frost... pastures and alfalfa took a hit, things seem to be recovering alright,  but everything seems slow this year.

    Sire to Dam Size Question??

My 4.5-5 frame bull got the job done too - definitely had to jump for some.  I would be concerned about possible injury if he had to jump too much though, but haven't seen any issues...

    Mad Cow in cali.

I would assume that the US is like Canada and that since we are both countries that have had BSE cases, but it is recognized as a very low level prevalence, that the odd case is not unexpected and will be ignored by world markets.  I forget what the exact designation is... also has to do with...

    New pasture seeding, variety suggestions?

I've heard of people doing this, but we have always seeded everything at the same time. This year, I'm seeding down about 38 acres.  And actually my seed guy suggested something that I think is great wrt seeding - we are going to mix the seed with the fertilizer and broadcast on.  Light...

    Pickups

Thanks - my dad has a 2007 gas dodge 1500, it's been descent for us, but it has low miles as it isn't driven very far for the most part. I was interested with the new Fords (and I guess others) that have a lot more towing capacity with the base 150 model.  Thought people were saying that since...

Anyone know if the Dodge GAS pickups are similarly good?

    New pasture seeding, variety suggestions?

If you are looking at native warm season grasses for summer slump grazing - look into Gamma Grass.  It is an excellent grass that is a cousin of corn, very high in sugar, nicknamed ice cream grass because cattle like it so much.  Other native mixes, blue stem, indian grass etc. are good to. As...

    grazing fescue

Does Frost/Freezing make it better? Fescue is one of the best fall/winter stockpile grasses.  I'm actually planting some specifically for this purpose, endophyte free ofcourse.

    Blue Roan Shorthorns?????

I presume that all 'British' animals need full papers for this show circuit.  Up here, 4-H classes and small shows would divide British X and Exotic X as there usually aren't enough purebred animals being shown.  Although this doesn't seem to be a bad system, British pure, Exotic pure & a...

OH BEEF EXPO SHORTHORN SALE RESULTS???

Sounds like we need a genetic test for this one.  I agree any 1-nut bull should quickly become a steer, but I guess it is a bit difficult to get that nut that hasn't descended...

    Question for Canadians

(clapping) That is the way to go for sure!  I calve after mud, wet/cold... April & May calving makes the most sense for low maintenance operations.  Also, peak grass growth is just around the corner when your newly lactating cows need it most (when they double their intake vs dry period).

    Train leg hair

Can someone post a pic or diagram of the directions one should work the hair, or just explain it in more detail?  I've always been fuzzy on direction other than 'up'.  Is it towards the front/back etc? on inside and out? Thanks.

My Shorthorn Herdsire - Little Joe 96W

Attached are pics of two of my Little Joe 96W 2011 heifer calves.  Both of these girls would be shorthorn plus (spotted 85.2%, roan 75% in Canada book), out of two of our best cows.  Just can't get rid of these cross cows when they bring in calves like this! I have some video on the roan...

    Shorthorn bull pictures

I think when trying to compare BWs and what is normal in your area, it would be useful to weight the actual cows too.  My gut is those cows having 120lb calves are pretty big themselves.  I did this a while back in my own herd, had fall cow weights and spring BWs and did the comparison, most...

Interesting reading on Sullivan flyer !!!!!

I'd say that the wide spread on the smaller framed bulls 'may' be because they are putting down some fat which takes more feed (more feed for 1lb fat, vs 1lb muscle).  I'd presume the large framed guys are definitely still in the growing muscle stage.  Just a thought. Avg performance over...

My Shorthorn Herdsire - Little Joe 96W

Thanks all for the positive comments.  I really like him too and we are very happy with how he has developed :) On the frame score - he is definitely on the moderate side, last time I measured him he came out around 4.5 frame.  Should probably do it again now that he's older and see. Any...

My Shorthorn Herdsire - Little Joe 96W

Hi all, Thought I'd share some pics and video I did back on the Christmas break.  This is my herdsire - Muridale Little Joe 96W - he is by Bonanza and out of a Buster 14k daughter.  I have a few pics and some videos of a few of his heifers this year (he only ran with a few in 2010) that I'll try...
