    Help understand BW EPD's

Anyone know who is handling the data generation for the joint-EPDs?  Like what company or organization.  -Thanks Across the board EPDs for all cattle would be interesting, but I don't know if it would result in everyone driving their breed to the same average...

    Profitability Index

Good advice Chambero. I think following operations that are well established and doing well is a big piece of the puzzle.  Finding the ones that are aligned with what you want to do can sometimes be challenging :) On the Leachman thing, I did hear that he actually uses Beef Improvement Ontario...

    Profitability Index

Been some talk about $ index EPDs lately - I came across the Leachman $Profit EPD which seems like Leachman developed himself... I assume this is somehow part of the Black Angus deal, but not sure since he's got composites as well.  Anyone know more info or have experience with it?  Or general...

What's your most exciting matings coming in 2012?

Totally forgot about the confusion with the Longhorn deal - don't have hardly any of them up here in Canada so I guess that aspect is a non-issue. Love the roan's too, A&T perhaps you'll end up sending him up North ;)

Interesting reading on Sullivan flyer !!!!!

Thanks!  From the plots of the data it would seem that there are bulls in all frame score groups that are hitting that 5 lb feed : 1 lb gain.  Perhaps more bulls in the 5-6 frame range hit that, but there seems to be quite the spread, best 4.5:1 and worst 8+:1 overall among all bulls.  Would...

Looking good  (clapping) I'll have to sort through my pictures from last spring and see how my picks turned out :)

Frame scores - how small is too small?

Sure guys, jump all over the small-moderate frame guy.  I was only pointing out some possibilities.  I don't have any problems with repeat buyers, and the scenario I was proposing was a small-moderate framed commercial cow herd combined with a growthy terminal cross bull (in a cow-calf operation...

Interesting reading on Sullivan flyer !!!!!

Can you explain a bit more?  The Ideal/Perfect scenario on the comparison one doesn't make sense to me - if F:G is lbs of feed per lb gained - ie 6.4 lbs of feed per 1 lb gain, then it wouldn't be the ideal...  I assume I have it backwards.  Please confirm. Good info.

Frame scores - how small is too small?

So the difference is 4 more 1200lb cows vs the 1:1 3% across the board maintenance which would give you 83 cows. You missed the negative $/lb margin for heavier calves, completing the math for last weeks Ontario stocker market (...

Frame scores - how small is too small?

I think people are missing the point on the usefulness of small framed animals....  grabbed this from the lowline Canada site, hope it comes through (based on the Trangie research, more actual lbs per acre produced with smaller framed cows).  This is a short-term vs long-term thing.  The...

What's your most exciting matings coming in 2012?

My most anticipated matings: 1) Can't wait to see what my 4 Rob Sneed heifers have - some could be Captain Obvious AI or natural to my Bonanza son Little Joe 96W. 2) Muridale Estill 69W (Bonanza daughter) x Muridale Little Joe (Bonanza son) Hoping for a solid linebred herd bull out of this 1/2...

    Shorty hf bulls

Yes, yes, commercial cattle at the auction mart usually sell by the pound (I've seen plenty of bred comm females sell by $ per head though, not weight).  But that isn't the point.  I thought we were mostly purebred producers here?  If your goal is to push down the scales the most, get a Short X...

    Shorty hf bulls

Thanks for the response Thunder.  Maybe if 1000lbs (450kg) is small and 2000lbs (900kg) is big, then moderate might be in the middle.  Perhaps frame score is a better measure to consider as actual weight will vary depending on time of year etc.  My recollection is that in the UK they had many 6...

    Shorty hf bulls

Hi Thunder - I get the general impression that alot of Aussie shorthorns are of the bigger framed type, similar to those in the UK etc.  Just wondering what you think - are there many 1200lb Shorthorn cows in Aussie? Thx

    Sun Country Bull Sale.

Does that include Lepto?  I assume the vaccine you are using does not contain that as I know that can cause problems.  Just the BVD's, IBR, PI3, BRSV then in the 4-way??  What is in the 8-way to get that many... is that the black leg and cloisidiral etc? Thanks for the info, really appreciate...

    Synchronize Estrus for AIing

Your 10% result/statement is not a fair comparison.  Those cows that didn't show heat may never have caught anyway, they could be the ones that don't respond to the treatment for whatever reason.  A fair comparison would be to do ALL cows TAI and see what your results would be.  I assume...

Would that vaccination protocol preclude these bulls from passing health tests for semen collection/export?  I always been under the impression that if bulls are vaccinated they will show positive for antibodies which would cause them to fail health tests (can't tell if they really had it or the...
