    Finding semen on old bulls

Cliff,     You can come out and get on your knees for old times sake.  Last time I saw you, it was after Louisville? about 1987 when you stopped at the house for a tire change in the rain/sleet/snow.  You remember that nice evening don't you?

    What do you call this....

One word at our house.......work.  Since the "hay rack" doesn't have anything on it, it should definitely be called work since it's MTY.  When full of hay, it is called "damn thing".  Used in a sentence, it would be "get that damn thing to the barn before it rains".  While in the barn, or next...

    Finding semen on old bulls

aj, talk to Harry Krug about the Duke of Dublin bull.  He used the tar out of a son called TNT Duke 6R, and had a pile of daughters.  Twig and I looked at his cows in the early 80's when everyone was on the tall/narrow/bad rant.  Harry's cows were very uniform, moderate framed, beefy animals.  I...

    Building a Herd

One thing to consider as well as all posts above is "what do you have for natural resources for your cattle herd"?  If you have 10 acres of Indiana fescue then you can figure on have 8 to 10 cows.  If you are in Montana and have 1000 acres of grass, then you know what you can hold.  If you can...

Is anyone Planning a Get Together in Denver this Year?

No aj.  In my humble opinion, it is a function of quite a few issues. 1.  Most all breeders live and die by selling junior heifer projects, and most buyers have their calves for the year, so there is little interest in heifer calves. 2.  It's not the national show, so numbers are always down...

    Finding semen on old bulls

cliff, you're bringing up old memories of traveling with Gene's bull Goliath.  That was a few years back when all I was allowed to do was brush and lead to the washrack!

Is anyone Planning a Get Together in Denver this Year?

M Bar will be at Denver on the hill with our Shorthorns and Shorthorn plus cattle.  Planning on being there Jan 13th until After the open heifer show.  Look for the M Bar stalls in the shorthorn area and a fat guy with a black cowboy hat.

    Dream Ranch Location

Jill, the two ranches you are referring to are the Donahue ranch, which is located on HWY 50 outside of the big town of Cedar Point, and the other is White ranch, which is/was owned by the late Clay White.  Donahue's have ranch ground all over Marion County, as well as Donahue trailer division...

    Tools

After completing a healthy project at the house (tack room, indoor wash rack), I recieved an e-mail that explains most of what I have been doing since getting home from Louisville. TOOLS EXPLAINED DRILL PRESS: A tall upright machine useful for suddenly snatching flat metal bar stock out of...

    Shorthorn heifer, your opinions please

She looks really nice.  I do believe that we are taking the "whisle fronts" to the extreme.  From my experience, those tight fronted, small jawed cattle don't equate to easy keeping, easy fleshing cows.  Heck, I have some.  They are always 1 body condition score behind the "dumpy" cows in the...

    Bred Shorthorns Wanted

M Bar will be selling 2 bred heifers in the Royal Gathering sale on Sunday December 14th in anita Iowa.  If you are interested, please look at our website at www.mbarshorthorns.com, and look at the sales tab.  If you need more info, let me know.

What do you think of her?

You are correct on the Kendra cow.  She(sale heifer) looks really nice (the old cow is out on milo stalks behind the house).  The other two sale heifers are just as good and the Frontpage cross calves ought to be darn good.  When large scale angus breeders stop in their tracks to look at the...

    Louisville.....lets get together.

Had a good time hanging out in the shorthorn barn.  talked with quite a few folks, but didn't make any connections on who was on SP.  The fischer bull looked darn good and coulda - shoulda won the bull show.  JoeBnTn was there and talked to him.  To those who made the committee meetings on...

    protein tubs

One other thing to consider, 10 days @ 1.5 # consumption per head  X 30 cows is 450 pounds.  They are probably eating more, but your intake is still less than 1# of supplemental protein per day if your tubs are 32% or 38%.
