    Banding

By dropped you mean off.... Right?? The area should not be pussy and smelly. No crusty scabs. If it is, you need some antibiotics and a topical, as well as a fly repellant. Clean the area well.

Looks like some great beef. All natural? I'm guessing not. Hormones or additive feed? Really though he looks good. I like the spring in his ribs.

    FINDING A SHOW STEER, CA?

We produced the CH FFA market steer last year at the Lake County Fair.      He was a purebred Angus calf, judged by LaFrankie.  We have 3 calves going this year, and are looking really good. Next years calves look real promising.  We have about 40 calves to chose from, Angus, Simmental, Herford...

    May Be Looking For Hay

Here in CA, too many fields didnt get planted with hay because of all the rain. It's going to be a premium here too.  Looking at $280+ for a ton of alfalfa.

So who is carrying all the stocker steers? I know we are doing ok. Just getting ready to hay, about a month late because we had late rains. Anyone want to go in on some steers. We've got about 400 acers of irrigated and 400+ of winter, dry ground.

    Fescue Grass/Hay

I'm in CA, grow and cut or own hay. Grass hay, rye, orchard mix. 3 wire bales are roughly $9, alfalfa which we have had better luck feeding in the winter is now $18. Last year we picked it up for $8 per bale. Figured we f eed less, and the do better on the alfalfa.

    Fescue Grass/Hay

There are different types of fescue grasses. Some are not susceptible to the fungus. Most persons that grow hay know this. As far as I know!

    Yield %

I personally think going with the processors who don't sell retail, and only do for the actual growers is the best way to ensure that your getting all. Only a retail store front would benefit from skimming. Secondly, make sure to know your weights. Ask for weights once at the butcher, ask for...

    Yield %

Figure about 450 lbs. take home. That's average size beef, and getting about 100 lbs. per quarter. Once you start doing all bone out, you lose weight considerably. We have a butcher shop, raise our own beef for consumers and restaurants. We also process for others who raise their own animals.

Sunday pics from Kansas , what do you think about the 2 steers legs

On the move he seems to be ok. I think the coloring lends to the odd looking conformation. The bone looks big, but structure seems ok. Is there something I'm missing? Maybe just a tad upright in his pasterns. Definitely a big bonded boy. Maybe not going to be the easiest moving boy with weight...

    Natural stride

The fluid flex is glucasomine products, with some other additives. The reason why the fluid flex probally worked well was because of the yucca. It's a natural anti-inflamation. With glucosime the key is getting the max ppm/dosage. Many products dont use the highest dose, this charging you more...

Any thoughts on what might have done this (gruesome) ***Updated***

We have had coyotes do that to a calf before. It was bedded down in brush and mamas were off eating. The voltures round here pick at the guts and eyes, dont leave much but definitely dont take half and run.

Cost Comparison between Buying Beef from the store versus by the side?

I think that because prices vary so widely from one portion of a state to another, and from one producer to the next, that making a generic comparison just isn't possible.  If you figure roughly 100-120 lbs. of meat  in a 1/4, and that's minimal bone, and price is $450 per 1/4, your getting a...
