Taming a calf that fears/hates its owners

Sounds like the calf doesn't trust the owners and the owners are scared of him. Doesn't sound like the calf's disposition is the problem. I second what chambero said. Get the calf a new environment and hopefully he (and maybe the current owners) will forget and they can both start over. I've got...

How is sale order determined at your county fair?

It sounds like the sale order is an issue where either only a limited number of animals sell or maybe the money plays out the further down the sale order you are. As stated in another thread, we have a committee that knows about how much premium there is and divides it equitably among all the...

How is sale order determined at your county fair?

If I understand correctly, it would seem awfully time consuming to basically place every single animal...if you sold 6th, you'd be 6th best etc. Our sale is CH, RCH, class winners and then all the 2nds, 3rds etc. We class by weight and no breeds. So the classes sell lightest to heaviest. For...

need help with 4H letter to buyers

Every program is different, but our committee attempts to keep the pricing of the calves on a fairly equal level based on placings. We try to avoid what others have mentioned here-one family's calves bringing way more because they run the "big operation" and deal with all the feed and seed...

    Stubborn Steer

Second the metal ring halter. As stated this is a behavior you have to break by finding a way to make him think he can't get away from you. Maybe work with him in a smaller area where he really cant get away for a while. Set him up for success.

need help with 4H letter to buyers

As a member of the "buyers committee" for our show, we make personal visits. I assume you are talking about finding sponsors for your own individual project rather than the whole county or area you are competing in. Either way, as a former exhibitor, now father of exhibitors and sponsor, I would...

    Walmart beef

Walmart and Sams are certainly the same company, however they do not sell the same beef products. Sam's stores have butchers that cut and package boxed beef in store. They can fabricate pretty much any cut of steak you want. Most of the beef in Wal-mart stores comes case ready already packaged...

    Cheap Show Steer. Opinions?

He's a dang nice steer no matter what he cost. Looks like he was a bargain and you have done a great job with him. 1525??? Definitely outside the champion weight range at most shows. I hope your sale is like ours and he will sell by the pound.

Steer stopped eating....fair in 2 weeks

Probiotics brand name is Probios (probably others). Its a blue paste that comes in a tube. We give it to our steers when we leave a show or at the first sign of backing off feed. It's not a drug. It replenishes "good rumen" bacteria. Don't wait till next week. It certainly can't hurt. No withdrawal.

    Breaking a steer

Zach if this was Twitter I would retweet that reply. Jokes aside, I know there are gentler methods that many believe in. We however use the tie 'em hard and fast method and let them fight it. You will know in a few days, maybe hours whether you are going to be able to break him. Put him in a...

    Cow Hide Rugs

Experience with taxidermist for steer hides, deer heads, fish and waterfowl is that a taxidermist month is longer than a human month.  (lol) I have the hide from my last 4h steer that my dad fished through many greasy green hides to recover from the packer. It has been hung on the wall and laid...

    feeding ?

We have replaced as much as 1/2 the ration with beet pulp. Our steers have always loved it dry. My understanding is it will expand wet so they may not eat as much as they would dry. I would think max "guts" would be achieved fed dry and then let it expand in the stomach.

    Some People!

The last part of the article is obvious sensationalism and attempt to appeal to the animal rights readers. I am 100% for free markets and capitalism. I don't care if you are an ag teacher or a broadway actor, anyone can be in the cow business and the cattle will speak for themselves as far as...

    Some People!

Love this quote “We knew the skimming had been going on for a long time, but not to the extent that they were skimming us,” he said. “I can afford it, but it's still wrong." So a little cheating is ok?? But a lot of cheating is not??? It's ok until it happens to you??? I'm curious as to how...
