its ALL red, white, and roan under the hide!

I have posted this before, but we recently sold 32 head of purebred shorthorn steers and heifers.  We received the CAB premium for them.  They were mostly red, but certainly were not black. I feel that the tide is turning and that the Shorthorn breed is going to make significant strides in...

And another trial confirms it. Best Breed ever.

I don't have pictures of the 32 head of cattle harvested...but 28 of the 32 were either sired by AF KF VG Step Ahead (pictured) or Highland Synergy (Step Ahead son - full sister picture is attached)

I provide the carcass data...you guess the breed

I think you make a good point.  The winter for us was unseasonably warm and I think it played a role in how well these cattle graded.  However, we do have data from years past and the percent Prime and Choice is just as good. 2011 - sold them as calves. 2010 - sold 24 head on the grid.  22 of...

I provide the carcass data...you guess the breed

As I just said...this is not the first time that we have sold Shorthorn fat cattle qualify for CAB.  So...did the packing plant make a mistake both times?  Or do they forget the color of the hide when CAB is needed?

I provide the carcass data...you guess the breed

It could have been a mistake, but this is not the first time that we had shorthorn cattle qualify for CAB.

I provide the carcass data...you guess the breed

Yes...28 of the 32 were sired by AF KF VG Step Ahead (2008 National Champion at Denver) or a Step Ahead son that we raised.  I tried to attach a pic of Step Ahead, but with no luck.  Here is a link to pic and pedigree at Cattle Visions.  http://www.cattlevisions.com/Shorthorn/AFStepAhead.php

I provide the carcass data...you guess the breed

They were purebred...as in 15/16 or higher.  They were predominately red...some may have been considered dark red but they certainly were not black. It has been mentioned on here already, but I would say that there was a shortage at the time of CAB cattle...so they "forgot" the color of their hide.

I provide the carcass data...you guess the breed

AJ - the point is many on here may not expect Shorthorns do well on the rail, but that couldn't be farther from the truth.  No show ration...only a home mixed ration using a PTO driven roller/mixer.  It was a corn, oats, protein supplement (DDG based).  The ration is reasonable in cost since...
