what do you guys get for consigned animals?

30% is pretty common for commission. I am in that boat. Look at a couple things. Would you ever get that type of money selling them the way that seller does. Another alot of times your not stuck with feed or hours put into them for the sale and I think is a big one it isn't your responsibility...

    Corking a steer!

It does nothing! It would do more harm than good. But because of human nature people want to believe in what they hear! If we would've "corked" that steer he would've been kicking his pecker and pissed of instead he was hurting badly an didn't want to move which my 10 yr old daughter felt...

    Corking a steer!

Well more than a month ago we won our county fair pretty handily. Well the morning we went into the fair the steer developed a urinary track infection. We planned on selling him on the sale since my daughter couldn't show at state fair so we didn't give him any drugs because of withdraws. Well...

    Winning weights

1335 is kind of the magic number for the big shows. But those county fairs and smaller shows it can range so much I've seen calves win from 1200 all the way to 1400. Just depends on the competition and the judge

    Roto brush wet or dry?

I've always rinsed then rice root brush down then forward then blow out till somewhat dry not bone dry then roto brush go back and brush forward sheen an blow out the rest of the way working the hair up. It's always worked great for me constantly working and separating the hair. It seems to me...

Drying after washing- is it important?

It does trap heat and by getting them dry your separating the hair allowing the skin to breathe which in turns allows the hair to grow. I've done it where I've washed them brushed them out and let them stand in front of the fans for an hour then blew them out the rest of the way.

    Water Cooler for Ice Bath

The thing with the ice water is it chills the hide causing them to stimulate hair growth. No different than a calf in winter the colder it gets the thicker the coat. I've been icing calves for 15+ yrs. you can definatly tell a difference between ones we've done and the ones we haven't.

    shag vs hide and hair

I've used grow n shine and shag. The hide n hair will be here tomm. Honesty can't say there's alot of difference between any of these. I think they all help. I think it ends up being more in the calfs genetics. Just my opinion. And hard work of course!

    New Trailer

Just traded in an exiss in for an elite smartest thing we ever did! Works great for shows and also for hauling cow/ calf pairs being able to move the gate.

    Who raises good angus steers?

Thanks for all the suggestions I have starting contacting some of these people! One thing I must say I am looking for one that is dog gentle. My daughter loves being in the barn but still very hesitant on leading one around! Thanks again

    Who raises good angus steers?

In Iowa it has to be purebred. Anything fishy "WILL" get blood tested. I know Joel brooks been to his place a couple time. The thing it's seems to be in Illinois is that everything is a little higher because of the Land of Lincoln deal people willing to spend more when you have that chance to...

    Who raises good angus steers?

I'm already kind of on the hunt for an angus steer for next year. My middle daughter is just kind of getting into the showing deal and and an angus steer would be perfect for her. not a lot of competition in Iowa here and a lot of point and angus shows thru out the summer. Looking for something...

    steer popping pasterns

The reason most pop is because the heel on the hoof has grown to fast causing and uneven surface causing them to pop! Not saying its the case on this calf but why waste 100 of dollars on stuff when a simple hoof trimming would take care of it

    steer popping pasterns

Get his hooves trimmed. The guy I use says that will fix most of the problems

    fort dodge show weather

I'm taking my daughters steer. We're coming from eastern Iowa. It can't be any worse than how it was at Tipton last weekend. I can see it being like that show numbers down but the ones that have a shot will be there and the point getters will all be there it's that 50-75 that won't come because...

    Hoof Trimming

It all depends on the calf. We're showing a steer this weekend and just did his tonight. As the guy who does our hoof trimming refers to them if they are  a puss or not(pardon my language) on how soon we have to do it before a show
