I am assuming you are clipping for a market show?? I know you clip breeding goats differently.
I slicked them all the way down; less than 1/4 of an inch remaining. I paid a guy to clip for us before our show and he stripped them all the way down that short as well. Make sure to clip them...
I clipped ours last summer a couple of times: just used the clippers we use on cattle for first cut, and then went over them with finer clipper I use for clipping my horses' faces. I know you clip from the hock up; slicking the body. Make sure you have a stand for clipping. I clipped ours the...
My son has come close the last 2-3 years at our local show - but he finally managed to pull it off this year - his senior year! This is his Troubadour steer weighing 1285. Special thanks to our breeder for all his help and AOOK for his ration!!
My son won Grand Champion honors at our local show this past weekend with his Troubadour steer, and my husband and I thought it would be neat to get the hide tanned for him, as this is his senior year of high school. Does anyone know of a place in South Central Tx. to get this done, and the...
This is our first year showing goats, and at our local show, they brace goats. Looking at pics from major shows in Texas.....they brace goats. Not sure where you are from, so check with a knowledgeable person in your area.
My son showed recently at our local progress show. Our show is a slick show but this show was strickly showmanship, the animals were not judged. The judge commented on my son being able to walk his steer into place and not having to move his feet with the show stick, and how he would like to...
Anyone in Texas seeing more issues this year due to the drought?? We had a calf born, looked good, up and nursing quickly. The next morning nursing fine, that evening, calf could barely walk. Hunched over, just really weak looking. The cow is poor coming off the drought, but appears to have...
In LLBUX's defense, he did not say using Zilmax is cheating. Cut the BS and I were talking about people cheating.....but again not referring to the use of Zilmax. (We digressed!)
We have fed Vitafirm for the last three years from start to finish. Keeps them on feed, keeps their gut working. It's packed with vitamins and minerals. Just keeps them really healthy. <party>
Agree with above post: feed free choice hay and cotton seed hulls to keep that belly full and extended. I would coast him for a month or so, weigh him, then calculate the days remaining. He will slow down at a point, and the heat will help. Feed Rice Bran the last 2 months to pack on a nice...
I agree, it is a shame, but unfortunately that is where the show industry has gone. I would like to see our local show go to local bred and raised calves only-- but you can bet, that is not a popular idea.
Thank you all for the help...... I have my work cut out for me now, checking out all these great prospects. I knew you guys could point me in the right direction!
Anyone know who has some that are good, and reasonably priced. My daughter really wants a "hump back girl calf" to show at our local show and maybe a couple of jackpots. Oh, Texas only please. Thanks!!
Nu-Grow was suggested to us this weekend. My son's steer is a little, shall we say...... high strung. I was told that drenching with Nu-Grow the morning of the show and then again three hours or so before we show will take the edge off him. I know this containes melatonin and B1. Just...
Get some Stabilized Rice Bran as previously mentioned. I buy mine at Tractor Supply - it is marketed for horses, but we haved used it the last 3-4 yrs. with great success. Start with 1lb per day and work up to 2lbs per day. Increase slowly and watch for the runs. You can keep increasing to...
