    Homeade Show Boxes

We found a used one on Craigslist.  There are some Buy Sell Trade sites thru facebook that are specifically for stockshow related items.  I have bought and sold items on them.  Shop around and be patient; you should be able to find something and save $$$

Looking for a feed / ration calulator / balancer - or help with my ration

Does anyone have a link for a ration calculator; where you can list your feed contents and amounts and it will give you the protein, fiber and fat %? Or if I give someone my ration, can they help me adjust it?  My breeder said I have too much corn for show heifers; 60%.  Thinking of increasing...

    Joint supplement questions

Someone recommended Dumor brand Horse Joint Supplement to me for our show pigs.  I start them on it almost immediately after we bring them home- just one scoop a day (small scoop that comes in the bucket). This year I started using it on a show heifer that was popping her pasterns.  One scoop...

    Show steer rations

Do a search on here for AAOK's ration.  Been using it for years with great success.  Will add SRB or CS hulls as needed.

Pig experts --- Need help with sick, newly purchased show pig

Thanks to all for the help.  Surprisingly the breeder is not much help.  I thought if I dealt with a well known and respected breeder that I would be safe.  From the start he told me it sounded like the pig hurt himself at my place.  Really? Coughing his lungs up, which he was doing at your...

Pig experts --- Need help with sick, newly purchased show pig

Regarding the temp.  - it came down fairly quickly.  We misted him with water and put a fan on him.  The vet gave him Banamine, Lincomycin and something else - another antibiotic  - pretty stout dose according to him.  We gave him another dose of banamine and Linco the next day and will...

Pig experts --- Need help with sick, newly purchased show pig

I bought a new barrow and gilt for my daughter to show from a fairly well known pig breeder in Texas. The barrow had a cough when we brought him home. He seemed a little sluggish from the start. About 18 hours after getting him home he couldn't put weight on his right rear leg. Within a couple...

Dad bought a steer calf from the sale barn HELP!

I would give him a tetanus shot in case it was not given at castration.

    Honest opinion

There is a great team!  She loves that calf and that's all that matters right now.  As for the feed - he needs to be on a good finishing ration for show calves.  You can search this site - We have used AOOK's ration on both steers and heifers and had good success.  It's a reasonably priced...

    Honest opinion

Great advice from HGC and I agree 100%.  Having a good experience and learning life lessons are worth more than that banner or buckle.  Your stepdaughter should focus on learning all she needs to know about showmanship as that is where she could excel this year, especially if they do a novice or...

    Show feed question

The Grand 4tifyer is high protein and the Power Fuel is high protein. I would definitely not add the Powerfuel at this point - way too early in the game.  Sounds like the feed guy was trying to make a sale!

Stubborn show heifer that won't lead

This works - try it!  It will likely take a few daily sessions, but they figure it out fairly quickly.  This method is used and successful with horses as well.  Be patient and don't give up.

    Stabilized Rice Bran for heifers

We have used it for several years on steers and swear by it.  I would like to try it on heifers but afraid it would get them too fat.  The folks using it on heifers, do you decrease the corn in their ration and how much SRB do you feed daily?  Any issues with getting them too fat?

    Show cattle health?

Good point - I've seen quite a few dead broilers being judged at our local show!!  Eating yourself to death.....maybe not a bad way to go!!  ;D

    "Short Coupled Steer"

She's bred now, so we will see how her calf turns out before making that decision.

    "Short Coupled Steer"

We had a Mainetainer heifer just like this.  When she was younger we would notice it sometimes when she walked, but when setting her up she looked fine.  As she got older, it became worse.  Her last show at 22 mos, even loining her it was still noticeable.  Any suggestions on her next breeding...
