Looks like we have a predator in our midst!!

Found these tracks in our barn yard last week, within 40 yards of our house.  Calving start in a month and we are just hoping this cat was just passing through.

One of our junior herd sires

The simple fact that there were a lot of Bred Heifers at Agribition that weighed over 1600 lbs blew my mind.  The average cow on our farm weighs 1400-1600 and most bred heifers in that 1100-1250 range.  The bred heifer we showed weighed a little over 1200 lbs and for he frame size we were...

Tyson stops buying Canadian beef due to US country-of-origin meat labeling

Protectionist economic policies from a government kept a float from foreign government loans.

Tyson stops buying Canadian beef due to US country-of-origin meat labeling

So the american's don't want our oil or beef, so much for free trade and being our biggest ally and trading partner.  Time to start pushing Canadian products over sea's.

    Rummensin question

Same thing happened to us and our calves went off feed.  We were able to find a mineral w/rummensin in it and mixed it in as we fed that tote and it worked great.  If you do mix your own rummensin in you need to follow the directions on the bag.

MONTIE SOULES HIRED AS SHORTHORN EXECUTIVE SECRETARY/CEO

Lots of talk about pedigree fraud but yet this association still doesn't mandate DNA herdsire verification which leaves a open door for more pedigree fraud.

    sire verification

I found the answer on there website. 1. General: Animals do not have to be DNA genotyped to be registered. However, if an animal becomes an A.I. sire or a donor dam, all required genetic testing must be completed and a DNA genotype record on file with the ASA prior to registering any progeny...

    sire verification

Does the American Shorthorn Assoc make it mandatory that all sires have DNA verification/Hair sample on file?

    Posts being moved to Classifieds

I find it odd that some posts get moved to the classifieds section ("No Worries" @ Executive Sires) but yet other people can start posts about their upcoming bull sales and they don't get moved.

    Swollen Navel

We quit using iodine one year at the recommendation of the vet and we seen a huge increase in Naval infections, since then we use iodine all the time and it helps.  If we do have to treat a calf for naval infection I usually go with 2 treatments of Nuflor and it seems to do the trick.

Some pictures of Western Canadian bulls

I have to agree with AJ on this one.  In our herd we have a mixture of older long spined big cows and then some off spring that we have used more moderate bulls to create. I would take a herd of those moderate cows any day over some of those longer spined cows we started with. My feed bill and...

Theories on backwards and upside down and backwards calves

One year we had a pen of roughly 15 bred heifers all bred to the same bull and kept together there whole life, over half of those calves were backwards.  The next year we used the same bull again and didn't have a single backwards calf.  The only thing we could think of was not enough exercise...

Your thoughts on the results of the National Red Angus show in Denver

Before you start calling people names you should know the facts.  When the owners bought the bull he was believed to be clean and they used him that year, during that first breeding season they had interest in the bull so they got him tested in the event they decided to sell semen on him.  When...

So this bull with a unique pedigree that has produced some outstanding CLEAN offspring is not a breeder and doesn't provide any benefit to the breed?

The rule came in after the bull was born and used thus they were able to continue to use him in Canada.  Carrier animals born before a certain date can still be registered in Canada but all there offspring need to be tested before they can be registered.  If any new calves are tested as carriers...
