    New addition to show string

She is a chunk.  My concern with her is she is not very tall.  She was the next to last spring born and is in with some march heifers and she is smaller.  I hope she gets big enough.  I see her being fun at all of the jackpots and looking quick at any major show.  She has a ton of hair.

    New addition to show string

She is an Elbee Throwback out of a MM Delco cow.  My son really likes her. She is super gentle and really hairy.  I had marked her to be sold but he says he wants to feed her a while.  I am not very good at saying no when it comes to added another calf to the barn. Let me know what you all...

    Clean up bull options

Mark I had a local simmy breeder buy 10 units of throwback.  It will be interesting how that works.

Capiche son, use as show steer or herd bull?

He looks to me like he is already pretty mature looking and if he is breeding cows he is probably getting to masculine appearing in his front end to make a show steer.  He may weigh more that you think.  Do you have a market for him as a steer or bull?

“New” North American Shorthorn Genetic Evaluation

I just looked at one of our bulls and it changed his numbers drastically.  His birth went up and but his growth numbers went up significantly.  He was about average on growth now he is in the top 20%.  That also pushed all of his maternal numbers down significantly.

Article on youth programs - good read

I find the article some what disturbing.  We as agriculturist and especially families that show livestock have to be very cautious about these kind of articles.  There are a lot of people out there that would would love to see the showing of livestock stopped.  Plus this kind of negative...

    Another Feed Program Question...

Right now sure champ is costing me $0.66 per day for the heifers and $1.32 for the bull calves.  We also have diamond v yeast and a complete mineral package mixed into our ration.  You just need to let your local nutritionist know what you are feeding so they can balance not only the ration but...

couple shorthorn plusses at a west by god va county fair

Nice pair.  In a lot of counties those would be in the purple. Sometimes we forget that a lot of these counties are not as competitive as others. I spent a year in Northern North Carolina and went to some sale barns in West Virginia and I do not remember very many great ones, but I have also set...

    Cattle prices wow!

Last week I saw a group of 297 pound steers bring $3.98.  That is over $1100.00 for a calf.  I just cannot make those work.

    show barn conflict resolution

It was almost 10:00 and they had been working together all afternoon.  The love had to run out at some point.  I only took the picture because they were both still laughing.  I intervened before it got serious.

    Showmanship And Showsticks

We practice with no stick at home.  I want the kids to be able to get the calves were they need to be by applying pressure on the halter then we just use the stick to scratch and keep the calve comfortable.  When the cattle get trained it makes it so any one can show one and look very good.  My...

Is now a good time to buy embryos?

First off I ma going to say I feel like way to many cows get flushed.  I believe only the very elite cows in a breed should be flushed.  With the high cost of recips I would feel like this is a bad time to purchase embryos unless you plan on saving them for later use.  The time to buy embryo is...

    heat and hair dont go

Just keep brushing and keep the skin and hair coat healthy.  Keep him as cool as possible so he will continue to eat and perform.  When the days shorten in September he will start to grow hair again.

Huge Heifers at SH Jr. Nationals

I agree with Oakview all of the breeds have some very large cattle.  Those cattle that are pushed from birth are going to be several hundred pounds heavier than calves managed like commercial stock cows.  I will say I thought that as a whole the cattle were smaller this year than they have been...

    Our Junior nationals trip

Mark I was hoping we would be close enough you could have made it to the Jr Nationals.  It would have been nice to meet you.  He is a Throwback out of a first calf heifer Kolt Foxxy (Final Solution x Kkim foxxy).  His reg number is x4206741. He had an actual birth weight of 63 pounds (with the...

    Our Junior nationals trip

1338 miles later we end a great week. The kids worked very hard and were rewarded with a lot of success. Lexi was 2nd high individual in the judging contest and 3rd high in team sales. Ryan was 4th high in team fitting. Then in the show we had a class winner, one second, three thirds, one sixth...
