How do you think my daughters 1st show steer is coming along?

Thank you! Some good advise with the water bucket deal. We did use his same feed pan for grain at the show, but you are right, the water bucket was different. We water him in a muck bucket at home. I did see several people using those for watering and it would not be hard to pack a much bucket...

How do you think my daughters 1st show steer is coming along?

Our first show was a big learning experience and a lot of fun. The steer handled the show pretty good but he was stressed enough that he would not drink well even using filtered water and he did not eat as good either, so he got a bit sunken in and gutted up. The first day my daughter and he...

How do you think my daughters 1st show steer is coming along?

Thank you! OK, we began an increase in his feed tonight and will go back to doing what we were(increasing his feed every few days) and see what happens. We usually weigh him mid day and since I don't have a scale, we have to haul him out. He does not stress too much about the trailer rides. He...

How do you think my daughters 1st show steer is coming along?

To clarify, we should be feeding him 25 pounds of his grain a day PLUS, rice bran, corn oil & cooked corn and upping his beet pulp? How does getting him fat slow down his frame? I would think it would be the opposite, the more you feed him the larger he will grow. We still have 168 days until...

How do you think my daughters 1st show steer is coming along?

Thank you guys! He is a great first steer for my daughter. Very laid back and easy to handle. We do not have a grooming chute yet but he ties at our horse wash rack like a horse while she does her washing, blowing and grooming. Thank you for the advise on the flank area. He used to be deeper...

How do you think my daughters 1st show steer is coming along?

This is my daughter's first cattle project and my first one in 28 years. Boy have things changed but most of the basics are coming back to me. He is not show clipped yet, this is just a rinse and blow. Their first show is this weekend. We weighed him the other day and he weighed in at 910#. At...

Ring Worm Just won't go away

We have been currying the areas already and applying the Athlete Foot Cream. It worked right away on the steer, but this heifer it is everywhere. We will try the bleach and iodine, heck I have MTG too! Did you guys apply the bleach & iodine every day?

Ring Worm Just won't go away

It started with my daughter's steer and we quickly treated it with Athletes Foot cream and it was gone almost as soon as it started. Then the heifer got it and she has it bad. We have been treating her the same way and its not going away. Someone suggested pour on Ivermectrin, but Ring Worm is a...

county fair show- groomed or slick?

In the fair shows I have been too, adults are only allowed to supervise. There are no adults allowed to groom any animal. With the being said, any 4-H or FFA member may help another kids with grooming, Now if that kid happens to be a damn good groomer, than its ok, but it just can't be an adult...

    County Show = Popularity Contest

VC & BDTD made good points too! Our kids are learning valuable life lessons that life is not always fair but that you keep on keeping on and the victory is in knowing you did your best. Green, some of these ol' coots on here like to kick ya when your down. Ignore them. They don't realize what...

    County Show = Popularity Contest

Green I have to say I can totally relate. This past year was my daughter's first year with a market animal, a lamb. We actually bought two lambs from FFA member who was breeding top club lambs, so we paid a nice sum for them. My daughter worked theses lambs daily and poured her heart out in to...

    2014 prospect bulls

Ok, I am a greenhorn when it comes to Prospect bulls, but these guys look like Shetland ponies. Are they supposed to be so short legged & compact? They almost look like the miniature cattle I have seen (Limflex or something like that)?  :-\

Should I buy another heifer or try to find a bred cow?

Thank you for the advise. Thats what I thought too but figured a nice bred cow or bred heifer would be out of my price range. I will have to keep looking. Any suggested bloodlines I should stay away from?

Should I buy another heifer or try to find a bred cow?

I am looking for a bit of advise. So far we have a very nice market steer for my daughter to show at our fair late next summer and we have a March heifer by Bodacious that we plan to show a little and then breed. We want to get at least one more female but have limited funds. Our goal is to...

    What to breed her to????

So interesting and weird all at the same time. I was thinking of breeding our heifer next year to I80 since he is LBW and I have seen so many nice calves out of him. So I am glad to know this so I can weight additional options.

    What to breed her to????

What do you mean by "bothered to live"? Also too, sometimes certain crosses just do not work. Sorry yours didn't.

Started with a steer, now just bought a heifer!!

I am sure that many breeders have those "pet peeves" that they can not get past that help them to cull their herd to the type of cattle that they want to breed. While I recognize this heifers tail set may not be ideal, I really do like the rest of her and think she will be a good steer producer...

Started with a steer, now just bought a heifer!!

Yup! I knew that was what you meant when you posted the photos ;) I will definitely plan to breed her to a bull with a cleaner tail set when that times comes, which will be for a March/April calf of 2015. I will do some research on calving ease bulls, but I know that I like I-80 and he is one I...
