Calving Ease for Dirty Hairy and Rocky Balboa

Couple of years ago we bred 3 heifers to Rocky Balboa.  Only 2 stuck (thankfully) and both heifers had 95-100 lbs calves.  One heifer and one bull.  Both nice calves but one was a hard pull and after that we packed the other up and took her straight to the vet for the requisite C-section.  One...

    County-bred restricted shows?

I also agree that its not right when you have no options.  Our county sometimes has a county bred steer show. We don't have a lot of producers in the area so most years it doesn't happen.  But, our state fair has a state bred steer show.  That show is restricted to calves born and bred in the...

    heifer wont eat

Well, I tend to be one of those people who will tell you that they will eat when they get hungry.  But when you said she wouldn't eat winning fill, I had to start wondering of something else is going on.  Switching feeds around can make them a little picky for a bit, but she should pick back...

4 EVERYONE That's Ever Had a Cattle Dog.

We have a little corgi that is the dangest dog. She'll stare down a full grown cow with calf at side.  She has no idea what backing off means unless I yell at her.  She even has a running feud with the skunks.  It doesn't stop her one bit when she gets sprayed.  The cattle dogs - on the other...

    Twin Question

Keep feeding the calf every couple of hours.  Try to get thim to suck, but tube him if he doesn't. BUT DON'T OVERFEED HIM!  You can kill them with kindness.  A little milk every couple of hours is better.  If you have the traditional calf bottle, sometimes a smaller nipple will work better.  The...

    Hardcore

;D  My son had a hardcore steer that was reserve champion maine at the New Mexico state fair last september.  I really liked the calf.  He was very moderate in frame finishing out at 1250 lbs and no problems with structure.

    Maine Anjou------What's up?

I am going to take a stab here and guess that he was talking about Caviness (sp?) in the panhandle of Texas.  I do have to agree though, being involved in show, raising commercial cattle and having a hubby in the meat industry for over 30 years, that the beef industry requires a moderate sized...

    Did you get any snow?

I'm livin in the high desert SW.  Skiff of snow and in the teens currently (maybe higher now).  Our kids pray for snow days.  We bought a calf that came out of Michigan and he's out running around in blue flowered bermuda shorts........

    Ft.Worth Shorthorn Show

Wow.  I am also constantly amazed at the stupidity of people - maybe I should know better by now.  Anyway, I am not associated with any Texas stock show, don't show nationally and I don't even raise registered catttle.  But, I am involved locally with our beef show.  And I can guarandamnteeyou...

    feedd???

Another place you can find good information are the feed company websites.  Google Purina, Showmaster, etc.  and they usually have blogs and posts that give advice.  I have learned a great deal from the nutrionists over the years.  Most of these companies have them available for your questions.

2012 1099 Laws and how it relates to the $ your kid earns from livestock sale

OK everybody, simmer down.  It has been the law that you pay income on anything over $600 FOREVER!  And, I have been an accountant for a couple of decades and yes, back in the 80's it was also the law that you send out 1099's for anyone who you pay over $600.  It's not that hard.  All you have...

Should Barley not be fed in the winter???

That brings up a whole new topic of how teenage boys that show have a distinct disadvantage over those cute little teenage girls!!!!!  Sometimes it is so obvious its pathetic.

    Would it be worth it?

Young lady, any time you invest your money in an asset that has the ability to produce income for you, it is a good thing.  Every investment has its risks though as others have pointed out.  But, you can buy a heifer or two and start out on your own.  This makes you a self employed business...

    Heatwave. is it all Legit?

Ok, maybe I'm to tired, but this is weird man, just plain weird..... As for HW, the best calves we have had were HW or family.  Had a heatseeker steer that did good, couple of HW's and have a Kemosabe right now that I really like.  Just seems like the chances go up with a good HW calf and yes...
