    Stupid Fair Rules.

Our state fair is a blow and go and does the white towel test.  But, by no means are these cattle not fitted.  It does indicate who has been working on their animals and who doesn't because it's much easier to show a calf with hair than without.  We can use shaving cream on the legs if you do it...

Who is Tom Hill - livestock judge from Oregon

Tom Hill is being considered for our local steer show and I would like to know more about him.  I tried Googleing him and really didn't find anything.  Who is he and what does he look for in cattle or if you can direct me to more info on him I would appreciate it.  Thanks.

    An Update On Show Steer

YES, you can feed a calf to much.  But, every calf is different - just like people.  Some calves will eat themselves to death and others turn their noses up after a few bites.  There are a couple of issues with pushing a calf like you are talking about.  First, you want to keep him healthy and...

Sullivan's Arctic Circle, and wave tamer.

I haven't used the wave tamer but have seen on here where you can use fabric softner for the same results.  I have used downey and thought it helped on a heatwave haired calf.  The artic circle is nice if you live in an area of low humidity such as the Southwest which is where I live.  They...

    Advice/Opinions of Steer

I don't think he's a bad steer, but I agee some guts would help.  If he is having gut problems, pour some probiotics to him.  Also a bloat or rumensin block may help.  Happy gut, happy calf.

    When do you worry??

Sorry about the stiuation but you live and learn.  Heifers are a pain.  Most people dont want to waste that first calf, but its much better than losing both a calf and cow.  Breed heifers to an angus bull or even a lowline - get a live calf and let the heifer deliver it.  When they start kicking...

    Eating

First, make sure he isnt' sick.  Does he act sick?  Does he look sick?  Use your common sense or call a vet.  If he is just not eating, there can be a couple things you can try.  If he has been a good eater and is just off his feed, then as tough as it is, back off a few days and just feed him...

    Your most recomended showday products...

what would life be without a strand of baling wire! I also have tons of zip ties, copies of the show rules, all of the calf papers, extra halters and tie ropes, and a bible.  (It never hurts.)  I did find a new product at Walmart that I haven't had a chance to use yet but might come in really...

    When do you worry??

Your #1 priority right now is to get a live calf out of that heifer and don't worry about the milk.  If the feet don't show soon, call a vet asap.  If you live in an area where there are any dairies, you may be able to buy frozen colostrum from them.  You can use the packaged products though. ...

    White Eye

My son bought a White Eye heifer this fall and we really like her.  She is out of a chill factor/all about you cow and is solid red.  She is gonna be a big thick cow when done.  Looking forward to some good calves out of her in the future.  You can still see a pic of her (if you want to) on...

    calf wont walk

Me either!  It was kinda like slowing down for a car crash on the highway.  You know you shouldn't do it, it's gonna be ugly and then you're embarrassed you did!  Yuck.

Question on amount of sedative to give heifer

Sorry "bovine and equine", but I have to chime in on this one.  I am in the group that will tell you to put this thought out of your head and work more with the kids and the calves.  What you are talking about is called "dopeing" - just like major league ball players.  Don't like it with them...

Steer got nasty tonight, back to square 1 :(

Calves are like horses, if they get their head down, you're a goner.  Also, don't underestimate the value of a halter with a chain under the chin.  Let them drag one of those for awhile and make that chin sore and they will pay more attention to you.

    Scours

liquid fat is hard on the digestive system.  might try backing off of it some and adding pro-bios product.
