    kids and stupidity

I read this thread a couple days ago and then took my kids out to do chores.  I had to come back to the house for a minute and when I returned to the barn my 6 year old is standing beside a steel panel with blood all over her face and down her chin.  I then had to explain why we can't touch...

    Northern Legend 3N's EBV's

Yes, I picked them up at Hatfield.  The Legend daughter is out of his Baroness cow and the grand daughter is from his Butterfly cow family.  I am very happy with them, they will make great cows and are super quiet for the girls to show this summer.  I will try to get some pictures up if I can...

Steer got nasty tonight, back to square 1 :(

There is a way to use a tractor to help with a steer that runs away.  If you tie the steer to the highest part of the tractor you can to keep is head up and use the tractor as an anchor only.  DO NOT pull the steer with the tractor.  Someone needs to have a hold of the halter and lead him.  This...

Showing cattle at a young age

Here in Manitoba 4-H allows kids to show at age 8.  As well our local fair board encourages younger kids to show by offering a pee-wee showmanship class for kids under age 8.  My oldest daughter started showing at age 4 and my youngest at 3.  There  is no doubt that the families need to make the...

I use a small amount of straw and no mats.  Here in Manitoba you can get a fine for not having your trailer bedded.

Looking for activities for 6 to 8 year olds

I know this has probably been covered in the past, but with slow internet it is hard to do a detailed search.  We are looking for something to entertain the cloverbuds with.  We want it to be educational and mostly cattle related.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

    Some new steers!

I was at the Ag Canada Research Centre on the weekend and they showed us where they housed the first Limo bulls that came to Canada in the 70's.  They sure had to make some tall fences to hold them!!!  The breed has come along way since then.

My girls(age 6 and 8) each just sold their 3rd show steer, we have had regular talks about what the steers are for and what is going to happen to them.  This year the both came with me to the carcass appraisal event we have so they could see the final result.  We have some tears on occasion and...

How is harvest in your part of the world?

Southern Manitoba is MUD.  Most small grain that hasn't floated away is done, starting to cut beans in between rains.  Crops have been poor to slightly below average so far.  Most of the corn looks good if it will ever dry out, but fields are so wet some will have to wait till the ground freezes...
